This is a critical moment for tobacco harm reduction (THR) and next-generation products. Recent developments have shown that public health leaders are slowly moving towards supporting THR as a key missing piece of tobacco control. The Lancet published an editorial by two former senior directors from World Health Organization calling for widespread use of THR, while the NEJM Group published new evidence of the benefits of vapes as a means of quitting smoking, with a powerful editorial by well-known expert Nancy Rigotti. Parties to #cop10 in Panama also resisted pressure to support bans and restrictions on THR, deciding instead to evaluate the evidence over two years.
