Community Giving Week is all about giving back to Camp and School—but we would be remiss not to extend that spirit of giving back to the place we call home! To celebrate our Adirondack community, we wanted to recognize one of our great nonprofit partners here in the region, AdkAction. Here are some pollinator facts they shared with us recently: ?? Three-fourths of the world’s flowering plants and about 35 percent of the world’s food crops depend on animal pollinators to reproduce. That’s one out of every three bites of food you eat! ?? Threats including habitat loss and fragmentation, pesticide use, climate change, and disease are causing a decline in global and local pollinator populations. ?? Pollinators that can’t find the right quantity or quality of food (nectar and pollen from blooming plants within flight range) don’t survive. Right now, there simply aren’t enough pollinator friendly plantings to support pollinators. Learn more about AdkAction’s work in this recent conversation between our Garden Manager Kim Smart and Hannah Grall, AdkAction Project Coordinator - visit https://lnkd.in/ej96TWVK to watch the full interview. And if you haven’t made your gift yet, donate today at https://lnkd.in/e5-rHD2S!

???????????????????? ?????? ?????????????????? ?????????????? ???????????????? ?? ?? ?????? ???? ???????????????????? ?????? ???????????????? ??♂? Ever wondered what happens to vegetables left in the field after harvest? As part of the Votorantim Cimentos Volunteering Program our Madrid office came together for a vegetable gleaning session at Parque Agrario Fuenlabrada. Gleaning is an effective method of food recovery, where volunteers collect crops left behind after the main harvest. Why let good food go to waste when it can be put to good use? ??????????????????????? ??????????????, ???????? ????????????: Together, we gathered an impressive ?????? ???? ???? ????????????????????, including potatoes, carrots, peppers, eggplants, and tomatoes. Where did all these fresh vegetables go? We donated them to La Casa de Esperanza, Inc., a dedicated NGO in Fuenlabrada that helps feed families in need. ??????????? ???????? ???????? ????????????????????:?What does it feel like to turn a day’s work into a donation? It’s incredibly rewarding! This initiative not only brought us closer as a team but also allowed us to make a tangible contribution to our community’s welfare. By preventing food waste and supporting those in need, aren’t we indeed working together for a better world? #Volunteering #VotorantimCimentos #SocialImpact

Volunteers Week 2024 ???? This week is National Volunteers Week -time for us to celebrate the amazing contribution people make to the community. ???? Volunteering was a gift to me after I moved abroad. It is something embedded in Western societies: it is made a lot more accessible and possible than it was in Hungary (maybe just life struggle was too draining, or I was too young and didn't care to do it? not sure). Either way, volunteering became a big part of my life since 2015. A few great experiences I had, just in case you need ideas: - Sundays in Durrell Zoo: I truly miss being surrounded by animals??, cleaning up their areas??, food prep, or manning butterfly house ?? - Bat monitoring: I fell in love with bats big time while in Jersey, so recording their sounds and monitoring bats was a great experience ?? -Water testing in Citizen Science Program in Jersey: shocking but hugely important results... Let's not even mention water quality and sewage spillage going on in UK (disgrace)?? - Sussex Wildlife Trust: I enjoy the HIT squad days clearing hedges, wood chopping, planting native wildflowers or litter picking?? - Brighton Permaculture Trust: orchard planting in hail and gale force wind wasn't on my list but I did enjoy it nevertheless! ???? - Parkrun: the thing is I am NOT a runner, just tackling a beginners-course, but I either join as marshal (cheering) or tail-walker.????♂??? - I try and join lot of beach cleans organised by Leave No Trace, Marine Conservation Society, the Sussex Dolphin Project (their boat trips are fab by the way, if you haven't been yet!) ?? I know a lot of people who help other charities, support wonderful initiatives and are doing great things. Huge thank you to all of those who dedicate time and effort to volunteer!???? Share your volunteering experiences- maybe someone else is just looking for inspiration. Volunteering actually helped me hugely when I struggled with my mental health: so can highly recommend it as a remedy. It gives purpose, perspective, and it is a joyful focus time. ?? #volunteersweek #volunteering #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness

Events can be incredibly wasteful. We at The Bite Project are extremely conscious of it at every event we deliver. It was while running an event catering business that Ronni Kahn, founder of OzHarvest, noticed the waste and decided to do something about it. This is why OzHarvest, for us, is a perfect fit for our T-time team days. (T-time is short for thoughtful time and is a day every year we take as a team and as individuals to do something thoughtful). Getting your people together to do something like this is a great way to: ? bond - teamwork is the dreamwork ? inspire - team feeling flat? Get them out together doing something different ? reiterate core values - sustainability is a key part of our value - thoughtful - this provided the team with hands-on experience with this ?? This is some amazing team being, inspiration, and thoughtfulness right here.
At The Bite Project we offer a free day to our people each year to use for their own thoughtful activity, e.g. cultural, creative, educational, volunteering, family time etc. We call it T-time, a.k.a “thoughtful time”. We also have an annual team T-Time where we all get together to do an activity. This year it was a team volunteering day. Doing volunteering as a team can be a great way to encourage staff to volunteer without them having to organise it off their own back - and by showing them it’s a company commitment that leadership are on board with (not just lip service). This year the team headed over to Port Melbourne to do “Cooking for a Cause” with OzHarvest. This is a great initiative as it has a range of important benefits - education, helping the environment and assisting those in need. We learnt about zero-waste cooking, sustainability…and some handy cooking skills. During our session our team was able to make use of surplus food rescued from landfill to make gourmet meals. These were then sent off to feed people in vulnerable communities. Learning that Australians throw 1 in every 5 grocery bags in the bin has definitely made me think about food waste at home more seriously. It was a nice way to get out of the office, connect with the team and feel good doing something that helps a very worthy cause. ?? Achievements 17 sticky date puddings 69 mushroom & veg pockets 60ish people fed 10kg of food rescued from landfill Organising a team day for a cause that aligns with everyone’s values is a great way to give back - and have fun while doing it. #volunteering #teambuilding #cookingforacause #ozharvest #sustainability

"In a competition of love we'll all share in the victory, no matter who comes first." - Muhammad Ali What if altruism wasn’t an afterthought but a core component of every strategy and decision? What if our foundational programming and marketing endeavors were designed with reciprocity in mind, where community aid organizations, like animal welfare nonprofits, are integral partners rather than peripheral beneficiaries? Building audaciously altruistic programs into the heart of our business models isn’t just a moral imperative—it’s a smart strategy. It creates a symbiotic relationship where businesses thrive, communities flourish, and together, we all share in the victory. When we align our goals with the needs of our community, we foster loyalty, trust, and a sense of shared purpose that goes beyond profit. Here’s how we can start: Embed Philanthropy in Your Business DNA: Make community support a non-negotiable part of your business strategy. This could be through regular donations, partnerships with local shelters, or employee volunteer programs. Innovate with Purpose: Use your marketing campaigns to highlight not just your products or services but also your commitment to making a difference. Showcase the stories of those you’ve helped, and inspire your audience to join the cause. Collaborate and Create Impact: Partner with community organizations to create programs that address specific needs. Whether it’s funding animal rescues, supporting local shelters, or launching educational initiatives, these collaborations can drive significant social impact. Measure and Share Success: Track the outcomes of your altruistic efforts and share them transparently with your stakeholders. Celebrate the wins and use them to motivate further action. To create a business ecosystem where success is measured not just by financial gain but by the positive impact we have on our communities, this is how we should start thinking. It’s about creating a culture where everyone—from executives to employees to customers—feels connected to each other AND a greater cause. If you’re ready to infuse your business with a spirit of audacious altruism and build programs that truly make a difference, let’s connect. Together, we can redefine what success looks like and ensure that we all share in the victory in this competition of love. ??
