Detail 1, M max=210 kNm Detail 2, M max= 161 kNm Detail 1 was regarded as challenging to execute correctly on-site. Consequently, a simpler alternative, Detail 2, was proposed and assessed in a project conducted at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. The evaluation indicated that Detail 2, where all reinforcement bars are spliced within the corner region, is a suitable replacement for Detail 1. However, special care still has to be taken when using this kind of detailing in beam-column connections where the effect of spalling can have large influences on the final capacity. Detail 2, apart from its primary benefits, also demonstrates excellent performance in frame corners under opening moments. To provide a comparison, Detail 1 was tested by Nilsson for opening moments, using a 6?12 rebar configuration and achieved a moment capacity of 11.9 kNm, whereas Detail 2 achieved a significantly higher moment capacity of 34.0 kNm.
