The Reality of Coaching: More Than Just a Day While a one-day course might introduce you to coaching concepts, it doesn’t make you a coach—just like a single day of medical training doesn’t make you a doctor. The Rise of "One-Day" Coaches: Who's at Risk? The surge in short online coaching courses has sparked debate: Are clients or certified coaches most at risk? For Clients: ?? Quality Concerns: Risk of receiving inadequate guidance. ?? Market Noise: Harder to find qualified coaches amidst the influx. ?? Trust Issues: Poor experiences can erode confidence in coaching. For Certified Coaches: ?? Market Saturation: Increased competition from underqualified peers. ?? Value Devaluation: Downward pressure on fees and standards. ?? Reputation Management: More effort needed to showcase expertise and maintain trust. Bottom Line: Both clients and certified coaches face real threats. What if an athlete can’t find the solution, then what? This was a question I was posed in a workshop last week. We were discussing questioning and not giving answers right away, when I was asked how to handle situations where athletes can’t figure out what they need to do. My response was that it’s okay to be explicit once in a while, but a) it shouldn’t be your default, b) you may be ‘sacrificing learning’ if you give an answer. (This is something I’ll explore further in another post) This was followed by a question from a coach that really got me thinking: ???? ???? ???????? ???? ???????? ???????? ???? ????????????? My answer was no, you don’t. In fact, leaving a problem “open” for an athlete may have several benefits: 1) It gives space for learning without the need to rush to a solution. 2) They may have the answer, but not in that moment. 3) It gives a coach the opportunity to think about how they can approach the issue from different perspectives rather than having to come up with something on the spot. 4)?It can create good coherence from one training session to the next. We’ve got short memories when it comes to training and leaving the door “open” can create continuity that’s really valuable. The upshot – it’s okay to leave some threads dangling as long as you come back and pull on them in the next session. With space you and the athlete could come up with new ways to approach the problem and new solutions. #coaching #learning #playerdevelopment #skillacq

Do coaching certifications really matter? After all.. you are already a licensed therapist.. You don’t need a certification to succeed as a coach—your ability to solve a specific problem and deliver results is what matters most. That said, certifications can boost confidence and credibility for some. If you’re considering one, choose niche-specific programs or ICF-accredited options. But remember, as a therapist transitioning to coaching, your clinical skills already give you an edge. Personally, I didn't learn anything I didn't already learn in grad school when I got a certification. Clients are drawn to results, not just credentials! At some point you need to stop only taking certifications and learn how to monetize your skills.
