Across the community, sport and voluntary sector the enormous value of people giving their time to help others, without pay, is generally accepted to be of huge benefit. But so often this vital contribution can be difficult to accurately quantify and as a result can often be inadequately recognised. This #Volunteersweek we salute all those organisations - such as Sporting Communities - using good MEL practice to evidence the role played by volunteers. ? 3rd attempt to post. Though at DEA they are not so proud to highlight their shortcomings that they have no issue hiding from taxpayers. They removed my previous posts which simply expresses DEA's willingness to hide their incompetence and disabled comments on the appropriate post. If this firm put out the truth and numbers of how many things they had to redo on this Highway 20 Safety Upgrade between Corvallis and Albany OR taxpayers would have something to say about this firm’s laughable ranking. How about it DEA, put out an itemized list of everything that had to be done two or three times because it wasn’t done right in the first place and how much taxpayers money was wasted in the process.?In my driveway alone they had to do multiple things more than once.?No wonder ODOT never comes in on budget with incompetence like this! Taxpayers should not have to foot the bill for this! DEA was contracted for at least the Newberg-Dundee Bypass, the worst one, up 239% from original estimate. https://lnkd.in/epv6uESx

Just a reminder, April is filled with a lot of celebrations and National days/weeks. Two of my favorites are National Volunteer Month and National Volunteer Appreciation Week. This is the time for us individually to get involved (if we aren't already) in something that positively impacts our communities at large. This is also the highlighted time for organizations to honor and celebrate the hard work and dedication of their volunteers. May your organization have 5 volunteers or thousands serving your mission and clients daily, recognition of their commitment to serve also helps in retaining them. So remember to spend extra time this month to acknowledge your volunteers. They are more than just a number in your reports. They are people who chose to make a difference through your organization. And whether they are with you for one day, one month, one season, one year, or more... they deserve recognition. Many of our programs, organizations, institutions, and the like would truly be nothing without our volunteers. Happy #VolunteersWeek to all who give up a bit of their time and experience for others. Truth is, it is not all about giving... there is so much to be to be gained by volunteering. Of people who #volunteer: ?? 77% say it has improved their mental health ?? 53% say that it has improved their physical health ?? 74% say it has given them more confidence (and that rises to 84% in the 18-24yr old demographic) Volunteering with The Scouts is the chance I get to work with young people (Cubs in my case!) to develop vital skills that will help them in life. Skills like #Teamwork, #Planning, #Communication, and running around in woodland trying not to get captured by other groups of kids. Give it a go!

Here are 5 things that made Leah and my Creative Waikato regional arts engagement work! ?? 1: Experience! Working with community in a variety of settings, whether voluntary or paid, was so valuable in drawing on past experiences and creating fresh ones ?? Never underestimate the wealth of practical knowledge attained in volunteering kaupapa too ?? 2: Partner in crime! Having a partner or a small team is immeasurably better than riding solo into the community. In our case, we worked super well together and this only amplified our efforts. 3: People-centric! Proactivity and passion flow when you love people, and the reciprocity and forethought needed to engage diverse people respectfully cannot be shortcut. Genuine care goes along way. 4: Innovation! Whether tiny cycles of iteration or bold leaps of risk, innovation is improvement. Being reflective is effective, and recognising the need to tweak, helped us continually power better community responses and reinvent our approaches. 5: Fun! People-work can be tiresome and draining, so it is essential to have fun every step of the way! We built in intentional pit-stops, but actually, the ability to spice up mundane tasks and daily activities happened naturally as we built trust and enjoyed being ourselves. It's fairly easy to design something, but having the know-how and practical insight to deliver a multi-faceted campaign can be tough! Hope these tips helps in a small way? ?? Ngā mihi

Empowered volunteers feel valued and bring their best to the cause. ??Foster Community: Cultivate a warm, inclusive culture. Encourage team spirit and build a family of like-minded individuals united by a common purpose. ??Listen and Act: Show that their voices matter. Regularly seek feedback and make meaningful changes.
