As we mark Earth Day 2024 - and yes I know it was yesterday - the need to address climate change becomes ever more urgent. Technology stands as both a contributor to and a solution for environmental challenges. Consequently, 34 leaders from diverse industries shared their insights on the role of technology in combating climate change. From our little corner at Fasthosts ProActive, there's one quote that I've, unsurprisingly, selected to talk about: "Most businesses don’t fully grasp sustainability. Not because they don’t care, but because they simply don’t know where to start. True sustainability demands continuous effort and a thoughtful integration of technology," says Simon Yeoman, our CEO at Fasthosts. From precision farming to renewable energy solutions, the convergence of technology and sustainability is evident. We must leverage innovation to measure, manage, and mitigate our environmental impact. So, I can't emphasis enough how reassuring it is to be able to boast about our Tier IV data centre in Worcester, as certified by the Uptime Institute. If you've kept an eye out, you'll have seen my own extracurricular efforts with Engineers Without Borders UK. I think I've harped on enough about this one project, and I'm not that sorry about it, but the relevance here is bringing everything that I can offer to the table. So what does this certification mean in the context of Earth Day? And how can I make this all about me and my MEng in Chemical Engineering? Well, I'm glad you asked: - Our photovoltaic installation across the entire roof (installed 524 kWp). - Our use of green electricity only. - Our use of HVO diesel for generators (boasting a reduction of up to 90% of net CO2 emissions). - Our charging points for EVs in the car park. - Our carbon-neutral building envelope. - Several further sustainability features like sustainable landscaping, green roofs, wooden cladding on auxiliary buildings, and bug hotels, to name just a few!
