A Phoenix Spotlight – 10 Questions With… Ryan Schoenroth
?
1.??????What is your name, title, how long you have been here and please give a brief description of what you do at Phoenix.
My name is Ryan Schoenroth, I have been working with Phoenix Energy Services Inc. for just over two years as an Electrical & Instrumentation Technician.
2.??????How did you get started in the industry??
I got into the industry immediately after graduating high school in 2016. I began my electrical apprenticeship – obtaining my Red Seal in late 2019. I wanted to expand my knowledge and scope of work, so I made the decision to enroll in the Instrumentation Engineering Technology program at NAIT and upon completion in 2022 I transitioned into the Instrumentation Apprenticeship which I have a Red Seal for this year.
3.??????What do you like best about working at Phoenix? What challenges you and keeps you engaged?
As cliché as it sounds - it’s the people. In my tenure at Phoenix, I’ve had the opportunity to work with individuals based out of multiple locations (Grande Prairie, Edmonton, Red Deer, etc.) and almost every time it’s been a pleasurable experience. Everyone is pushing towards the same goal and on the same team. With everyone working together it’s really easy to stay engaged and motivated for the task at hand. Same team, same dream!
4.??????What are you most proud of in your career so far?
I am most proud of having the courage to kind of “hit the reset button” when I chose to attend the Instrumentation Engineering Technology program. With the immense sense of accomplishment and pride I felt with obtaining my Electrical Red Seal it was hard to restart in a sense when I chose to pursue the Instrumentation trade. Looking back now, it is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and am so glad I did. It has expanded my knowledge and understanding of what we look at and use every single day in this industry.
5.??????What do you like most about our industry?
I like the idea that it is a hard industry. The work we do is physically and mentally demanding, whether it be working in -35 C pulling cable or pushing through a long shutdown - it takes gumption. The people that choose to go into this industry know its difficult but still persevere – and to be honest I couldn’t ask to be associated with a better group.
6.??????What advice would you give to someone who wants to enter your field and work at Phoenix?
Value your time spent learning – it’s your job to make mistakes and be better because of them. It’ll be frustrating and at times downright insufferable, but you need to make an active decision to learn and grow from what you do each and every day. The days can sometimes be long, but the years go by quick. Try and soak up as much knowledge as possible because sooner rather than later you’ll be the one giving lessons and advice!
