Consulting firms’ websites all say the same thing… How do you choose the right ones for you? I remember when I was in your shoes. As I looked around at the options in the consulting world, I felt overwhelmed. Confused. Every firm looked the same. MBB. Big 4. Etc. Their websites all read the same. They all served dozens of industries. They all provided dozens of solutions. What would fit the best with me? I tried reading company websites, But that left me even more confused than when I started. It wasn’t until I started having conversations with consultants... That I got the inside scoop... And a deeper understanding of how these firms differed. Here are the key factors to consider when evaluating firms: 1. Work-life balance 2. Travel expectations 3. Pay and perks 4. Competitiveness 5. Industries and functions 6. Culture When you’re trying to test where you fit, These are the 6 factors you should be evaluating. First, identify your preferences in each area. —Do you care about work-life balance? —Do you want to make the big bucks? —Do you want to work in a certain industry or function? And then you need to ask consultants how their firms size up on these fronts. The ones that match your wants and needs will top your list. While you’re having these chats, I also recommend talking with those who have already done this research... Consulting firms — stereotypes: I can't even believe I'm making this post, but... Consulting firms. Let's talk about them. I've worked at multiple, hired several, and even own one...and yet, despite having so much first-hand experience with so many different firms, I still find myself putting stereotypes on them. So I can only imagine how much everyone else does this, too. Someone told me the Gen Zers are calling their pet peeves the "ick" — so let's open up the conversation: what gives you the "ick" when it comes to consulting firms? I'll go first: - Taking forever to sign a contract and start the project. - When they immediately start trying to increase the scope of work before they've finished what we initially hired them for. - Giving you the impression you'll be working with the senior, more experienced team and instead handing your work off to their junior employees.
