Health systems with 501(c)(3) status are required to routinely conduct community health needs assessments (CHNAs) to identify community health concerns. The CHNA helps to inform the health system’s community health improvement plan (CHIP), which has potential to impact long-term health outcomes and increase health equity. The IACH Community Action Team, in collaboration with the University of South Carolina's Center for Applied Research and Evaluation, recently sought to understand the process and methodologies used by health systems in South Carolina to complete their CHNAs/CHIPs. Six health systems across the state provided the research team with materials and reports which were compared across systems to understand similarities and differences. The cross-comparison yielded many differences in data collection methods, health priorities and health systems partnerships. This research is part of a larger three-phase project to inform standardized methodologies for CHNAs/CHIPs. Hannah McKinnon, shown below, was one of the team members who worked on the project, along with Melissa Fair, PhD, and Olivia Comer, M.S. #communityhealth #partnerships #collaboration #sc #health

April is National Minority Health Month and I thought it was important to share the pros of being a minority and working in public health... Having people of color and diversity in public health is paramount for several reasons. Firstly, diverse representation ensures that the needs and perspectives of all communities are considered in health policies, programs, and research. Different cultures and ethnicities may have unique health challenges, beliefs, and practices that must be understood and addressed effectively. Secondly, diverse public health professionals can enhance trust and engagement within communities that have historically been marginalized or underserved. When individuals see people who look like them in positions of authority or expertise, they are more likely to feel understood, respected, and willing to participate in health initiatives. Thirdly, diversity in public health promotes innovation and creativity. People from different backgrounds bring unique experiences, ideas, and solutions to the table, fostering a more dynamic and responsive approach to public health challenges. Furthermore, representation in public health leadership roles is crucial for addressing systemic inequalities and advancing health equity. When decision-making bodies reflect the diversity of the populations they serve, there is a greater likelihood of policies and interventions that prioritize the needs of marginalized groups and promote health equity. Overall, the inclusion of people of color and diverse perspectives in public health is essential for ensuring equitable access to healthcare, promoting culturally competent practices, fostering trust and engagement within communities, driving innovation, and advancing health equity for all. It's not just about representation; it's about creating a more effective and inclusive approach to public health that truly serves the needs of everyone. #publichealth #healthequity #nationalminorityhealthmonth #blackmeninpublichealth #diversity

?? Let's Talk About the Intersection Between Housing and Health For the past decade, I’ve worked at the crossroads of health and social care, driven by the belief that the persistent crisis in healthcare stems from our compartmentalized approach to problems. Health issues are social issues, and vice versa—yet this intersection is often overlooked. In this series, we’ll explore how integrative thinking can lead to more effective leadership and innovative solutions. One key example is the critical link between health and housing. Initiatives like those led by Dr. Andrew Boozary at Toronto’s University Health Network and similar programs across North America demonstrate how addressing social determinants, such as housing instability, can drastically improve health outcomes and reduce healthcare burdens. By moving beyond traditional boundaries and embracing a holistic perspective, we can develop solutions that truly promote health and well-being for all.
