*The Importance of Inventory in Road Maintenance Contracts: My Perspective* As a Civil Engineer with a background in project management, I’ve come to realize just how important a proper inventory is when starting a road maintenance contract. Once a contract is awarded and an order to commence has been issued, conducting a comprehensive inventory of the road is a crucial step. This involves carefully documenting all the necessary work, based on the contract’s scope, to assess the extents of the work. This process is distinct from the Road Condition Survey, which is typically conducted earlier during the preparation of the Engineer’s estimates, and it plays a pivotal role for several reasons: ~~Gauge the full scope of work ~~Send precise site instructions to the contractor ~~Familiarize yourself with the road and its structures, gaining a deeper appreciation for the unique challenges and surroundings. Sure, we already conduct a road condition survey before creating the engineer’s estimates. But the inventory done just before work starts serves a different purpose. While the condition survey helps us get a general sense of the road’s state and estimate costs, the inventory is a deep dive — it ensures nothing is missed, and that we’re ready to hit the ground running. Ultimately, the inventory serves as both a guide and a control measure, ensuring that road maintenance contracts are implemented with precision and efficiency.
