Last week, I had the privilege of speaking at the South Dakota Academy of Physician Associates conference. It was such an inspiring experience to talk about "zebras" in healthcare – those rare, often-overlooked conditions that PAs should stay vigilant for. What struck me most was the dedication of the incredible Physician Associates in attendance. Many of them are devoted to serving severely underserved populations in rural areas, places that have been abandoned by hospitals and other healthcare providers. These professionals are often the only accessible lifeline of care for people who would otherwise face tremendous travel burdens and hardship to access basic medical services. The heart and commitment of these PAs reminded me of why the profession was created in the first place – to fill critical gaps in healthcare and to bring care to those who need it most. It’s not an easy road, but these individuals are staying true to the PA mission, making a real difference in their communities every day. To the Physician Associates of South Dakota and beyond – much respect. You are true healthcare heroes. Thank you for the incredible work you do to impact lives.
