Can’t you read!? What makes a demo or a polishing project successful? It’s an understanding of what the flooring type is and what you can or sometimes, what you cannot do with it. We (polishers) call it “reading a floor”. It’s looking at the substrate and studying it. What is wrong with it? What can be done to it? What does the client expect? What can I do to make it better. Sometimes worlds collide and you have to be the bearer of bad news. What the client wants, he cannot get (from the existing floor). You lay out options and expectations. Take the case of this 100plus year old terrazzo demo. Too many things have happened to this poor beauty. Anchors had been shot into it for wall partition, many different flooring types had been installed over it and removed. The client just wanted a beautiful polished floor. After a careful “read”, I gave him the great news. I laid out a plan of attack and delivered what he wanted. Though it may not be inexpensive, we had conversations as to why and he understood.
