Under the new Texas law, gas-powered, non-commercial vehicles between 2 and 24 model years old will no longer be required to have a safety inspection as part of the registration renewal process. However, most North Texas counties still require emissions testing to ensure that cars aren't emitting more pollutants than the allowed amount. ??Once your vehicle passes the emissions test, you can renew the registration. ??A $7.50 inspection program replacement fee will be added to the registration fee. ??Once you receive your new registration sticker, replace the old one. ??Electric vehicles, diesel-powered vehicles and motorcycles will not have to go through emissions testing ??Commercial vehicles in Texas are still required to pass a safety inspection.

Totally understand how the Canadian auto industry is frustrated by the abrupt pause of the federal EV rebate program, but it’s disappointing to see them respond by calling on government to remove EV ambition altogether. Even their U.S. counterparts have been lobbying for strong regulations to stay in place. https://lnkd.in/dEqbEQ8h The federal EV sales targets are not “impossible.” In Q3 2024, Canada already reached 16.7% sales. The first official sales target is 20% by 2026. A 3.3% percentage point increase in two years isn’t much—especially when Canadians are so hot on EVs right now. ?? Case in point: the federal EV rebate program (the “iZEV” program) was seeing a monthly burn rate of about $100M in 2024. With rebate amounts ranging from $2,500-5,000, that translates into 20,000-40,000 EV sales supported per month. This past Friday, Transport Canada announced there was $71M left in the program. By Monday, that money was gone. That's 14,000-28,000 federally supported EV sales in one weekend. One can hardly say Canadians are “cooling” on EVs. Industry analyst S&P Global Mobility expects EVs to make up 19% of Canadian car sales in 2025 and 25% in 2026, which means we’d surpass our first target. And let’s remember that the private sector plays a role in bringing EV prices down and building out Canada’s charging infrastructure too. A recent Parliamentary Budget Officer analysis (which assumed federal rebates would be phased out in 2025-2026) found that achieving the EV sales targets under Canada’s EV Availability Standard would increase the supply of Level 2 and fast charging ports, significantly closing the gap between where we are now and where we need to be by 2030, almost entirely as a result of private investment to meet the demand of new EVs. That’s the whole point of the EV Availability Standard—to recruit carmakers as partners in this transition. As we move into 2025, there's a lot of uncertainty ahead. But the EV transition isn't in question. Global EV sales broke another record in 2024, up 25% year over year. If Canada's auto industry wants to compete in a global sector and market quickly going electric, it’s gotta be able to make and sell affordable, high-quality EVs to a growing group of buyers.
