On May 31, 1921, one of the worst incidents of racial violence in U.S. history took place.
Tulsa, Oklahoma, became the site of a horrific m.assacre known as the Tulsa Race M.assacre. A White mob descended on the city’s prosperous Black enclave known as BlackWallStreet and proceeded to burn 35 city blocks, loot and kill Black people and also destroying their businesses.
About 10,000 Black people were left homeless, and property damage amounted to more than $1.5 million in real estate and $750,000 in personal property. More than 800 people were admitted to hospitals and an estimated 300 dead.
Today Viola Fletcher, the oldest living survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre, turned 110 earlier this week. Fletcher and Lessis Benningfield Randle, 108, are the last living survivors of the massacre. Happy belated birthday
