The discussions were covering a lot of topics from automating disassembly to exploring different recycling methods (pyro, hydro, direct). The main takeaway is that we need more collaboration and data-sharing from the industry. OEMs should be more open to taking risks and partnering with startups. It’s not just about “What can you do for us today?” but “What can we create together?”. Building a strong battery industry here in Europe is crucial — what’s the point of recycling if we don’t have local production? ?? ‘First-of-a-kind’ or FOAK for short is becoming a buzz word and much talked about in climate technology despite the fact, as American investor @robday @Spring Lane Capital wrote in Forbes, we’ve still got to reach agreement on how we pronounce it. Is it “F-O-A-K” or “foke” or “fo-ack”? ?? Whatever way you say it, FOAK is the first step to scale. As Sightline Climate (CTVC) wrote in their newsletter “…only after the launch of its first factory plant in Fremont….did Tesla grow into the success story of Cleantech 1.0 and drive the shift towards full-electric transportation. But the first of anything is always the hardest, and a true net zero future will depend on a ‘Telsa’ arising in every industry – from new ways of flying, generating power, or producing steel.” ?? ?? Working in the #FoundationIndustries of metals, chemicals, glass, cement, and ceramics we know this only too well. But the challenge of getting to FOAK is almost impossible for many. Interesting discussions on circular economy during the Circular Valley Forum today. The best were the start-up pitches. For example, QiTech GmbH Milan von dem Bussche presented his technology for separating plastic caps, WorkbenchX Bryan Winship who connects end of use industrial equipment to the circular economy, Re:notch Solar Heat Storage Erik Kayser who established a thermal battery to boost heat pump performance three times/reducing electricity demand by 30%. Or resourcly Helena Most who is turning idle inventory into a new input resource, building circular supply chains for industrial manufacturers using AI. All helps sustainability.
