What’s the point of spending Sunday mornings making flaming torches? Of growing a beard just so you can look more piratical? Of getting in a good supply of rook-scaring bangers to “deal with the corvid problem in my fields”? And of donning a tricorn hat and full buccaneer’s garb, parading through the streets of your otherwise sleepy Sussex market town? For me, it’s all about community glue. Here’s our latest family snapshot. Last Tuesday saw Bonfire seize Lewes by the throat in its annual celebration of “Wunt Be Druv”-ness, poking one in the eye of political pomposity on the local, national, and global stage. And having a darned fine time while putting on one hell of a display. For us Lewesians – even if some of us did move “Down From London” last millennium, we’ll always have a tinge and whiff of DFL about us – Bonfire is way better than Christmas. And there’s no better way to see the whole thing than from the massed ranks on the streets. In my friend Tim Johns’ three-piece life Weltanschauung, being part of Bonfire is most definitely “goofing about”. ? HAPPY FAMILIES ARE ALL ALIKE; EVERY UNHAPPY FAMILY IS UNHAPPY IN IT’S OWN WAY ?. LET’S GO FOR THE FORMER. -The first sentence of Leo Tolstoy's novel Anna Karenina. Interpretation: for a family to be happy, several key aspects are necessary (such as good health of of family members, acceptable financial security, and mutual affection). If there is a deficiency in any one or more of these key aspects, the family will be unhappy. On the other hand, families that fail to thrive as a unit all have unique stories behind their struggles. Possible solutions: 1. An environment where understanding, protection, respect and acceptance reign. Show a genuine interest in and care for each other. 2. Make it a rule to avoid all discussions where people have strong and different opinions; where imposing one’s own view is a priority and relationships destroyed. 3.Socialise with other other ‘clans’. 4.Note what creates good interactions and repeat. 5. Maintain, even create, rituals, anniversaries, etc. 6.Share stories. Family anecdotes are precious . 7.Share meals and venues but don’t impose your way. Any others......?
