A big thank you to everyone who took the time to send me birthday wishes! Yesterday was fantastic, and the highlight had to be a wonderful lunch at The Royal Oak in Swallowcliffe. For those unfamiliar, it's partly owned by none other than James May – yes, Captain Slow himself, known for his flowing locks and leisurely driving style on The Grand Tour and Top Gear. With The Grand Tour trio now heading off in separate directions after years of entertaining us with their unique brand of motoring mischief, it felt fitting to celebrate at a pub with May’s connection. And what a place it is – a quintessentially English pub, full of charm and character. The food was absolutely outstanding, and it got me thinking: what makes an experience truly memorable? It’s when something exceeds expectations, isn’t it? Whether it's an exceptional meal, a captivating show, or even… your interactions with businesses. Think about the companies that have left a lasting impression on you. What did they do differently? How did they go above and beyond? I’d bet they exceeded your expectations in some way – maybe through remarkable service, a unique solution, or by making you feel genuinely valued. As Doug Kennedy makes the rounds as a conference speaker and lodging industry trainer — and monitors lodging industry groups on social media — he often hears and reads people commenting that today’s guests are more difficult, rude, angry, and conniving than ever before. In recent years, these comments are also attached to a statement such as “Ever since the pandemic….” Yet when Doug reflects back on his own experiences working with the public, he says that he just doesn’t believe this is the case. Perhaps a term from the world of psychology can help us understand this perceived trend. "Rosy Retrospection" generally refers to a human tendency to remember past events from a more positive perspective than historical reality. The more we talk about this fallacy, the more we reinforce it. The end result is that increasingly, we come to work every day filled with negative expectations, dread, and anxiety, expecting to encounter rude, difficult, and conniving guests. Instead, what leaders should be doing is training their frontline staff to better understand and empathize with guests, to think about the challenges and stress involved with travel itself, and to prepare them to flip the vibe of those they encounter. Don’t let being judgemental stifle your growth It’s so easy to let judgment cloud our perception of places, people, and experiences. This approach can hold us back, limit the opportunities to have an amazing time, form great connections and learn. I experienced this recently when telling people about my trip to Buenos Aires. People often focus on the negative—like the “dangerous” areas of La Boca—rather than the beauty and warmth that make the city so special. Yesterday, we sat at a restaurant in La Boca (yes, a place known for being so rough they tell you to leave before 4/5pm ) and had an unforgettable moment. We asked a couple sitting next to us for their salt, and they not only gave it to us but also shared the last half of their bottle of local Mendoza wine. They said they wouldn’t finish it, and it turned out to be one of the best wines we’ve ever tasted. He then explained from the same area and gave us lots of tips for when we travel there in a few weeks. BTW, The food was fantastic too! This experience reminded me how much our natural instinct to judge can limit us. Judgment is often necessary for safety, but when it turns into a habit, it can keep us from seeing the good that’s all around us. Let’s practice more curiosity, empathy, and openness. There’s always something positive to find if we’re willing to look beyond the surface.
