Him quitting might be the best possible thing that could happen. Sure. I can come to Fargo. I bought an “UFFDA” hat in the airport gift shop. Two actually. I like that guy. He’s tough around the edges but he’s worried about the right things. I hear the Knights of Columbus do a nice lunch. Sitting in a church basement eating iceberg lettuce masquerading as a salad is a quintessentially Midwestern experience. The most important thing is that the two of you get on the same page. You’re not going to make bad decisions if you’re aligned w each other. Would you make the same decision if you had it to do over again? I really am just trying to understand. You’re smart. I know you had good reasons. Help me understand. Because I honestly don’t. Eos failures and dropouts are some of my best clients. It’s important to know what you need as a leader. And make sure you get it. I knew better than to order steak in a place like this. When is the funeral? (Hug your people today. Say the things that haven’t been said.) #leadership #professionaldevelopment

We don’t often talk about how hard it is to run a small business. It’s amazing, rewarding, stressful, hard work. As Elm moves into its sixth year in business I wanted to stop and reflect on what a wild ride it has been this last year. #smallbusiness #canberra #communications #consultants
"Every year, I stop to celebrate Elm’s birthday. It’s a milestone—fifty per cent of all small businesses don’t make it to five years. We have now exceeded that. It’s a moment to celebrate the hard work and effort my team and I have put in. What a year it has been!" May marked six years of Elm Communications, so it felt right to take a moment to reflect on the past year. In our latest blog, Mel talks about why this has been the best and the hardest yet. You can read it here: https://lnkd.in/g73MmPhf #elmcommunications #communications #birthday #smallbusiness

Have you been a “glass-cliff” business leader? You were asked to turn around a business only to find the shiny new leadership with no industry experience decides to replace you with the old crew that were responsible for the failure in the first place. I have seen this many times in my career, but did not have a name for it. It is so interesting to watch a business go from being stagnant for a decade to explosive growth over three years then back to the same low sales volume it previously had. No one can seem to figure out why the growth happened or stopped. Stories are spun and excuses are made to senior management about the industry being slow, the economy is down, etc…. I assure you that Sallie knows the real reason why. Success always leaves footprints in the sands of time and time always reveals the truth. Great insight from Sallie.
“It made me feel terrible. And it also was such a gift.” Sallie Krawcheck, Wall Street veteran and founder of Ellevest, walked?Fortune?through her early career and the building of Ellevest. Her work has led Krawcheck, 59, to become one of the most powerful women—and people, period—on Wall Street. During her ascent, Krawcheck led Bank of America’s Global Wealth and Investment Management division, and served as CEO of Sanford Bernstein and CFO of?Citigroup, among many other plum roles. In an interview with Fortune, Krawcheck discussed being fired twice from glass-cliff jobs. bit.ly/4cNtoSL

Pivoting to finance is a change for me, but here’s why I did it. When considering a new career/job, I feel there are three things to consider outside of the basics- compensation, PTO, and insurance. For me, it’s impact, fulfillment, and growth opportunity. For this reason, while standing with two offers and waiting to hear back from a third company, I chose Northwestern Mutual. Historically, people of color have not been taught financial literacy, and most of us are not prepared for emergencies that may come, such as funeral expenses. I witnessed this firsthand with my family pooling money together for funerals. For me, this was a strategic move based on the impact and transformation I (and many other leaders) can have within Black and Brown communities. There are not many folks who look like me in this industry, but I promise in the coming months and years that I will do my due diligence to empower us, educate us, and move us forward financially, professionally, and personally.

Entrepreneurship is a rollercoaster of highs and lows, but I believe it's important to stop and honor the milestones. Edstruments is celebrating its (legal) 5th birthday today, though the idea was sparked in early 2017 during my last year at Stanford. Here are five personal reflections on the journey so far as we cross five years ?? 1. ?? It took many people to get us here, including team members, investors, advisors, and supporters...including many who I have never even met in person. The earliest Edstruments partners who took a bet on us in 2020 (right before the world turned upside down) gave us some validation that we were building something of value and helped us persist through a rough first pandemic year. The partners who've joined us in 2021 and beyond continue to reaffirm that there is a real need for what we're building. 2. ?? Having the right co-founder is powerful. When Ashwin Gopi Krishna first started working with me in August 2019, it was supposed to be as a temporary ("a few months") favor as he was figuring out next steps. Today, Edstruments wouldn't exist without his technical expertise and steady product leadership. His skillset is completely different from mine, and our shared commitment to the mission and vision of what we do makes us a great team. 3. ?? Resilience, perseverance, and optimism are perhaps the most important characteristics to develop as an entrepreneur. I have never faced so much rejection in my life prior to this work...whether from a prospective partner, investor, or job candidate, I have been told "no" hundreds of times in the last five years. Staying optimistic and believing in the best days being ahead have kept us going even on the hardest days. By the way....some of those individuals who told us "no" before are now some of our best and most active current partners. 4. ? Staying grounded in what matters most has prevented entrepreneurship from becoming all-consuming. When I started Edstruments, I made a commitment to do it with balance, including prioritizing my marriage with Kelly, physical/mental health, and personal relationships. I became a father one year in, and had a second child three years later, both whom I try to spend quality time with every day. I have times where I commit to "switching off" from work, and for the last year I've met with a therapist monthly. I continue to nurture my faith and spiritual community. Perhaps all of this means we move more slowly than if I was working 80-hour weeks and every weekend...but it allows the role to feel sustainable rather than burn-out inducing. 5. ? Building something great takes time...much more than I expected. It's tempting to read articles about startups that exploded from "day one" and believe this is what success is supposed to look like. More commonly, certainly for us, it's a steady grind with various inflection points. We're hitting one of those now, and I'm excited for what the years ahead hold. Gratitude to all, Aditya
Today marks our 5-year legal birthday of when Edstruments was formally incorporated! ???? We are grateful for all the team members, partners, investors, advisors, and supporters who have played a role in our story to date. Check out the carousel below for "5 Stats for 5 Years", and thank YOU for following our journey! Here's to the next 5 years to come. ????

?? J.P. Morgan Chase provides $500K grant launching new Fair Chance Collaborative led Valley of the Sun United Way in City of Phoenix! One in three U.S. adults—more than 70 million people—have some type of arrest or criminal record. To put this in perspective, about the same number of Americans have college degrees right now. Unfortunately, these Americans, who were incarcerated or have a conviction on their record, are essentially unable to secure good jobs in this country. Nearly half of formerly incarcerated people are unemployed one year after leaving prison. This unique collaborative aims to address the this multi-dimensional challenges faced by these individuals who are now seeking employment and stability in the Phoenix metro with a comprehensive approach—coordinating job training, placement, housing assistance, healthcare access, financial counseling and more—to improve outcomes. As a leader committed to inclusive economic growth opportunity and addressing our community's workforce development challenges, JPMorgan Chase & Co. is proud to support this coalition bringing together social services, education, employers, economic development organizations, and top community leaders. By convening the right leaders and organizations to provide coordinated support, we can eliminate barriers that would otherwise silo efforts and ensure that more people in Phoenix will get a fair chance to rejoin the workforce and fully contribute to their families and the local economy. I'm proud to represent our firm on the VSUW board and to be a part of this vital effort. #FairChance #Reentry #SecondChance #WorkforceDevelopment #JPMorgan #CommunityInvestment #SocialImpact #JPMC #JPMorganChase #Chase #VSUW Carla Melissa Bertha Todd Jennifer Chris Neil Deanna Noreen Keri Kristin Ben Alison Monica Tucker Maura Charlie Ben David Latasha Jenny Drena Chad Elissa Mary Owen Mambu Doran Angela Angela Marie Sara Ann Brian Leia
?? Valley of the Sun United Way is forming a new Fair Chance Collaborative to help address the multi-dimensional needs of individuals in the Phoenix metropolitan area who have been involved with the justice system. The Collaborative was catalyzed by a $500,000 investment from the JPMorgan Chase & Co. Foundation. “Involvement in the justice system and past mistakes should not define a person’s future and hamper them from future opportunities to succeed after completing their legal obligations,” said Carla Vargas Jasa, president and CEO of Valley of the Sun United Way. “Through our community-driven MC2026 plan, we’re partnering with others to increase Fair Chance hiring and supportive services so those involved in the justice system have every opportunity to succeed—for themselves, for their families and for our community. We’re grateful to JPMorgan Chase for investing in the power of this collaboration.” ?? Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gKx2-ghb
