I thought a lot about where we are at with our community over the holidays and where it needs to go. I didn't know a lot about community when I first started this 2 years ago. I dove right in and learned more than I can imagine about everything that goes on behind the scenes –?managing people, operations, planning, thousands of different tools, etc. etc. Here's what has stood out to me on the world of communities. ???????????? ?????? ???? ???? The barrier to entry on starting a community is virtually zero. With little upfront costs and not a lot of skill required, every one and their dog can start a community tomorrow if they wanted. BUT that is about as far as 99% of them will get. It's f**king hard to run a community. ???????? ?????????????????? ???? "?? ???????? ?? ??????????????????" Yes, everything can be A community but I am going to blunt here. There is a HUGE difference between real community and "community". That is not to say there isn't immense value in the latter and community does come in many different forms, but there is a difference. WhatsApp groups, newsletter subscribers, followers on socials... they are all A community, but they do vary greatly. Everything is great and I am a huge advocate for community, but I think the lines between the meaning of community are becoming blurred. ???? ????????'?? ?????? ????????????????????? Most of what people call a community are more of a network. Networks are based on opportunities and often, self-interest, where people network together for their own benefit. People also move in and out of networks as they see fit for their own personal gain. Communities are for people to share with each other, learn from each other, and most importantly, support one another. They have made a commitment, through membership, to engage and participate not only for their own gain, but for the gain of all members. There is so much potential out there to make a difference through community but there are few I have seen that can make it work. It simply comes down to the people. Not just the people running it, but the members that make up the community. If you are able to bring great people together, you are half way there. The rest just comes down to your commitment in running the behind the scenes of engagement, learning, events, etc.

Ever heard of Social Saturday? It's not just another day of the week. It's a revolution in how we view our weekends. Imagine a day dedicated entirely to nurturing social connections, both online and offline. A day where businesses, big and small, come together to celebrate community engagement and foster social interactions. Social Saturday is about breaking the mold of traditional weekends. It's about prioritizing meaningful conversations over transactions. It's about supporting local, engaging in community activities, and reconnecting with the essence of human connection in our digital age. Why should we care? Because in a world where loneliness is on the rise, fostering social connections can be the key to happier, healthier lives. So, this Social Saturday, step out of your comfort zone. Attend a local event, support a community project, or simply have a meaningful conversation with someone. Let's make Social Saturday a day to remember. Because at the end of the day, it's the connections we make that define us. Ready to join the movement? Share how you're making the most of Social Saturday and inspire others to do the same.

Community Manager, as a title, is weird. I don’t “manage” online community members. They don’t directly report to me. I’m not higher than they are on the food chain. In fact, it’s in some ways the opposite - my role is to serve members and make sure they’re getting the most value out of the community as possible. I’ve seen articles from the late 90s / early aughts that refer to Community Organizers, a title that now is associated with political activism. So why did we choose to be Managers over Organizers in the last ~20 years? What are the implications of that? I’m not sure. Anyway, here’s a picture of my cat.

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. Community is everything. You can have the best idea in the world, but if you don't have the support of a community, it will be difficult to bring that idea to life. Your community is there to: 1. Support you during tough times 2. Celebrate with you during good times 3. Provide feedback and ideas 4. Connect you with resources and opportunities 5. Hold you accountable Building a community takes time and effort, but it is one of the most valuable things you can do. So, how do you build a community? 1. Be genuine - people can tell if you are not being authentic 2. Provide value - offer something of value to your community 3. Listen - pay attention to the needs and wants of your community 4. Connect - introduce people to each other and help them make connections 5. Give - be willing to give more than you receive Remember, a community can be made up of friends, family, colleagues, and peers. It can be local or global. What's most important is that you are surrounded by people who care about you and want to see you succeed. #Community #Communitybuilding
