In March, RNOH is starting a new initiative aimed at safe and effective administration of medication to children and young people. Kidzmed will teach children and young people how to swallow pills using an evidence-based, six-step technique. It is a programme developed for members of multidisciplinary teams to teach children and young people how to swallow pills safely. For children and young people: pills are less sickly, contain less sugar and children who swallow pills tend to have better adherence to their medication regimens. For carers: pills have a longer shelf-life, do not require a fridge for storage, are easier to transport and more readily available in local pharmacies. For prescribers : less prone to errors when writing prescriptions and can prescribe larger quantities. For pharmacists: pills are more commonly stocked in local pharmacies compared to suspensions. The #VotePharmacy manifesto for community pharmacy calls for the expansion of the #PharmacyFirst service in England CCA modelling shows that a fully-funded service would free up 30m+ GP appointments annually. We’ve undertaken extensive analyses on the rollout of Pharmacy First which show that the service is consistently meeting patient needs. In the first month: ?? 92% of eligible patients receive the care they needed without the need for further referral. ?? One-third of consultations have occurred out of hours (9-6pm), allowing patients to access care at convenient times. ?? Two and half more consultations took place in areas of higher deprivation. Indeed, CCA members recently hit a milestone of 200,000. However, there is still much that can be done to increase public awareness and drive GP referrals. Read more here:
