Dan could volunteer at an animal shelter or a rescue, but his heart is out here, with the animals that are alone and afraid. The animals here depend on Dan's big heart, what money he has, and his energy. Who takes care of Dan? Who rescues the rescuer? He doesn't ask for anything for himself. I know that if he won the lottery tomorrow, every last dollar would go to dogs and people in need. True charity is selfless. Dan embodies that statement. The need is endless. Dan lives in that world. No one person can fix things. But, if each person does what they can, then things can get a little better for animals. I get so angry. I wish I could tell people "Stop dumping your dogs!" "Get your pets spayed and neutered!" "Build better shelters and open more sanctuaries!" If there were no more dogs dumped in quarries and fields, that would mend Dan's heart. Until then, I hope that more people will do what they can. I hope Dan gets a new van, more dog food, and his own basic needs met. What can I do to help heroes like Dan? It doesn't feel like much at all. It feels like one drop of water when what is needed is a storm. It's overwhelming and keeps me up at night sometimes. The heroes need help. Dan needs help. The wildfires in California have left Los Angeles devastated, with over 180,000 people displaced, tens of thousands of acres burned, and countless families left without homes, businesses, or communities to return to. The Palisades, Eaton Fires and Hughes fires have collectively burned approximately 47,734 acres, marking one of the most destructive wildfire events in Los Angeles' history. The fires have destroyed over 16,000 structures, significantly impacting local communities and infrastructure.

We got way more excitement than we bargained for on Saturday night. After leaving a phenomenal performance by Tituss Burgess at The Cabaret, we figured the excitement was over, but then we noticed smoke rising from a building two doors north, just east of the lot where we'd parked our car. As we said goodbye to our friends in the lot, while watching the smoke, we began flailing our arms and shouting "FIRE" at a couple of people in the windows. We didn't dial 911 as sirens and lights were already present. By the time Andrew Keeler and I had gotten home, WTHR-TV was covering the news - HVAF's housing was aflame. I immediately reached out to the CEO of United Way of Central Indiana, Fred Payne, because HVAF - Helping Veterans And Families is a longtime partner in impact in our community - providing short and long-term housing and wraparound services to veterans and their families in Central Indiana to provide a foundation upon which they can build financial stability and opportunities for their families. What does it mean to #LIVEUNITED but to take care of one another during a crisis? If you are able, please join me in supporting HVAF as they seek to provide emergency housing to approximately 4 dozen who were displaced by this fire, not to mention all of the day-services that will be impacted.
