PowerSecure Storm Monitoring Update: Tracking AL99 (Tropical Storm Sara) PowerSecure is closely monitoring the developing system in the Caribbean Sea, currently labeled AL99 and expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Sara within the next 48 hours. This slow-moving system is projected to stall along the western Caribbean near the Central American coast through the weekend. Our latest forecast indicates two potential paths for Sara next week: West/Northwest Path: The ideal outcome is for high pressure over the southern U.S. to persist, which would guide Sara westward toward Mexico. Northward Path: If this high pressure weakens, a window opens for Sara to track north, potentially passing near Cuba and moving toward Florida. Our PowerControl Monitoring team will continue to observe the storm’s developments and share updates as they come. If Sara's trajectory shifts toward the U.S. or any PowerSecure customers, we are prepared to support storm readiness efforts. Stay tuned for updates and know that PowerSecure is here to assist with all preparations should they become necessary.

I've been playing with the geocoding of National Weather Service (NWS) storm events data. Eye opening for sure. Especially on state-specific basis. Below is an update to my previous example visual from last weekend. Today I've added data for less specific GPS-location events, like Wildfire. It's the total U.S. view but keep in mind, zooming to a specific area is a huge part of the attraction of this tool. You can see I aggregated the Wildfire and Hurricane Events as examples of less GPS-specific Storm Events. For Wildfire, and aggregating the events state-to-state, I used the product of event frequency by state times the average dollar damages cited by storm-watcher source for the year. I then post that sort of data with the centroid (*) of the state. Of, course, the 2023 Wildfire average is greatly influenced by the Maui fires. Some issues to wrestle to the ground with this, especially when showing multiple years and mixed storm events together. Suggestions, as always, welcomed. I do see it as huge addition to annual state-specific storm event summaries I began in 2024. And, consider there is the multiple year (20+) view of Storm Events with detailed severity data listed for each Storm Event (for example, Tornados with EF#, length, and width). Stay tuned on this. Much to see, learn and share on this data...and also combination with P&C insurer financial results (by state, by line of business, etc.). * Oh! Great example of learning something new every day. Did not know they called it that. Specifically, "It's calculated as the average of the x-coordinates (Longitude) and y-coordinates (Latitude) of all the points in a shape." ??

??Tropical Storm Ileana?? Today, Tropical Depression Nine has intensified into Tropical Storm Ileana. The system is currently located at 19.9°N, 108.0°W, about 385 km southeast of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Ileana is moving northwest at 15 km/h, with a turn northward expected by Friday night. The storm's center is forecast to pass near or over the southern portion of Baja California Sur on Friday night, before moving into the southern Gulf of California early Saturday. ??Maximum sustained winds have reached 65 km/h, with stronger gusts. Some strengthening is expected in the next 24 hours, though slight weakening may occur as the storm interacts with land. Tropical-storm-force winds extend up to 150 km from the center. The Mexican government has issued a ??Tropical Storm Warning?? for the west coast of Baja California Sur from Santa Fe southward, and for the east coast from San Evaristo southward. Additionally, a Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for the east coast of Baja California Sur north of San Evaristo to Loreto, and for the mainland from Topolobampo to Huatabampito. Residents in Baja California Sur, Sinaloa, and Sonora should closely monitor the storm's progress. Ileana is expected to bring 10 to 15 cm of rainfall, with localized amounts up to 20 cm, across the coastal areas of Michoacán, Colima, and Jalisco through Friday morning. From Friday through Sunday, southern Baja California and coastal Sinaloa may receive similar totals, with the risk of flash flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas. Tropical storm conditions will likely reach Baja California Sur on Friday morning, making outdoor preparations difficult or dangerous. Additionally, swells generated by Ileana will impact the coasts of Mexico and Baja California, causing life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. ??Stay safe and stay informed??

Through July 22, the number of tornado reports tallied in the U.S. is the second highest since 2010. The 1,480 tornado reports this year is 461 more - 45% higher - than the average pace since 2010, according to NOAA's Storm Prediction Center (SPC). This was largely due to a rash of severe weather later in spring, including the second most April-May tornadoes since 1950. While the pace slowed in June, Hurricane Beryl, Midwest derecho and Northeast severe weather boosted the tornado count in July. This year trails only 2011, which was boosted by the historic April Super Outbreak, among others. https://lnkd.in/dkenArhK . . #severeweather #propertycasualty #Propertycasualtyinsurance #insurance #InsuranceClaims #insuranceadjuster #claimsadjuster #ClaimsManagement #independentadjuster #CATclaims #flooding #haildamage #winddamage #stormdamage

Hurricanes present a deadly threat beyond just high winds and heavy rains - including tornadoes, flash floods, and sinkholes. Emergency sirens play a critical role in alerting communities to imminent danger. While mass communication, like texting, is valuable, it should complement, not replace, siren systems. If your community lacks functional sirens, or if they are absent altogether, please reach out to understand your options & how American Signal Corporation can help. #EmergencyPreparedness #CommunitySafety

Well, I've learned a bunch on the NCEI Storm Events database and Latitude and Longitude data. I'm sharing this for the good of the order and those that did not know this exists in Excel as a core-capability. I was playing with the data after my work in Storm Event data for a Big I State and I wanted to show it GPS-style for a presentation. I found that the frequency and severity data by year is the most useful but sharing this GPS-view of he data anyway for anyone interested. I see many other applications in insurance space. In the next post, I'll put up a PowerPoint of the data as categorized by similar events in the movie below. That is categorized by Hurricane, Tornado, Wind, Lightning, Flood, Hail, Wildfire and Hurricane. Note to make the number of graphed vertical columns manageable, I limited the display to only events reported by the NCEI storm watcher as over $1 million. That, of course, leaves out a lot of Storm Events. Those can be added but this is busy with 24 years. Less years and more events becomes feasible. One lesson-learned is that magnitudes are an art to control. They are all supposed to be relative to each other but with some events in billions of dollars and other $1 million, the program is not perfect. The column height is tied to the NCEI storm event spotter's estimate of damages. That, of course, is not what is covered by insurance necessarily but it's a seemingly even measure. Another approach is using the severity factor of the weather, as opposed to the estimated dollar damages but no all events have magnitudes provided. Hurricane as Cat#, Tornado EF, Hail inches and so on but there is nothing useable for Flood (water-related). I'm not sure if something like the next attachment will be of use for the developing state-specific Storm Events Summaries, but we'll see. PS-I discovered how to obtain a solid GPS coordinate for most locations based on a description using Google Earth. NCEI does not have a great GPS for every event so you must add those. Really quite extraordinary that such tools are free and in the hands of people like me. Again, not sure of the utility in Storm Events but knowing you can do this, create a MP4 movie or a screen shot certainly is a compelling capability to have in your back pocket.
