THEY’RE NOT LIKE US – Wrigcoll They show up in the boardrooms, silent when injustice screams outside, but quick to wear tuxedos in dining halls—where white privilege fills the air, and deals that silence Black voices fill the agenda. These “leaders” claim to stand for our community, but they profit quietly while our communities suffer. Racism festers in Boston, but when called to confront it, they sit out. These self-proclaimed advocates hold meetings with the elite, profiting off our struggle yet leaving our true needs unheard. They claim to be Black-led but refuse to fight for real change. Those who pretend to lead, remember: YOU ARE NOT LIKE US. Wrigcoll will stand, speak, and fight unapologetically, for we know what it means to face Boston’s racism head-on. We hope environmental organizations will continue to embrace increasing the use of biofuels as one of their goals to reduce the carbon content and toxic emissions from every gallon of gasoline and diesel in every vehicle every day. The path to a healthier environment and environmental justice has to be paved with cleaner fuels and powered by educated consumers. While new markets and technologies for electric vehicles continue to develop, there are no good reasons not to use biofuels to replace the benzene and benzene-laced aromatics in gasoline and diesel fuel. #gasolinegate

Beth Chandler has made an indelible mark on our city. I’ve had the honor of serving on the Board of YW Boston since 2018. That was the year that Beth began her leadership as President & CEO of this crucial Boston organization. In 2020, I became the Board Chair, which gave me the opportunity to work more closely with Beth. Beth is stepping down this summer, after 12 years with YW Boston and six as its head. With her guidance and advocacy, YW Boston has made Boston a more equitable place for the benefit of all residents, in particular women of color. Beth stewarded the non-profit through historic challenges, from a complex strategic planning process to navigating the pandemic to selling the landmark Back Bay building. She also seeded the growth of diversity and inclusion throughout our institutions.? I’ve learned a lot from Beth over the years. From her strength—she’s very direct, and stands up for what she believes to be right. From her willingness to listen to different opinions and perspectives, and change her mind. And I particularly appreciate her combination of vision and strategy. Anyone who wants to make transformative change in their organizations can learn lessons from her tenure. When she led us in a deep probe into the meaning of our mission, she helped us focus on who our beneficiaries really are: not just the clients we consulted or the participants in the program, but the colleagues and clients of those?people. She saw how YW Boston was a catalyst, inspiring and supporting people to be change agents in their own organizations. I vividly remember when the Board was discussing a tough decision. We’d been losing money on a volunteer-facilitated service. She wanted to hire staff to deliver it more effectively and charge a fee. We were anxious about the risk of hiring people with a budget deficit. Beth presented the alternatives clearly: we could gradually bleed out over time, or we could take this risk and build toward a sustainable model. She recognized it was the time for bold moves. We agreed. And when the demand for DEI services exploded, we had the people we needed and we were well positioned to provide the services. She also knew that boldness isn’t always about expansion. When I joined the board, YW Boston had 10 or 12 programs—we were spread a little thin. Beth and the leadership team honed the portfolio basically to three: Inclusion Boston, LeadBoston, and FYRE. These, along with advocacy campaigns like parity on boards and United Against Racism, share a theory of change: they build a group of people who have a real deep understanding of equity and inclusion, so that they can go back to their organizations and create change.? That vision has helped create a better climate for everyone. As we enter the final month of a tumultuous year, we are reflecting on the year that’s been, and the uncertain future ahead. Sometimes we are hopeful, and sometimes we are afraid. One day we’re frozen in despair, and the next driven to action. We recall the fear and outrage we felt for our migrant, queer, BIOPOC, low-income, and beloved friends, family, and community, and worry about how they might be further targeted in the months and years to come.? ? But we are also building on the lessons we learned in 2016, and the work of those who were organizing for change long before. The importance of community and mutual aid for sustaining collaborative movements that allow everyone to rest and act in turns. The immeasurable value of the too-oft invisible labor behind every demonstration and protest. The power of our collective voice. That joy, too, is part of resistance.? ? It’s an honor and a privilege for us to bring legal, policy, and research support to the grassroots and community organizations who advocate for a more equitable city for everyone. In the face of rising costs and growing movements based in hate, division, and scapegoating the most vulnerable members of our communities, this work will only get more vital. I really really want people to read this. It speaks to a lot of what I’ve seen in the field and how our communal relationship to power is failing us. We need plans for supporting Black women, femme, trans, and non-binary leaders in the field for when the inevitable revolt happens in or outside their institutions to their leadership. We need to develop better discernment around what is accountability and what is anti-Blackness. If we do that, we learn the lessons for how everyone else needs to be treated. We have to have a power analysis. We have to have systems for accountability that are more robust than removal. We have to create room. We miss out on so much visionary leadership because we don’t. These scenarios are of course happening to women, femmes, trans, and non-binary leaders of color in all communities but the brutality of the way it happens to Black women, it is unmatched. Here is the thing, no one is uniquely incorruptible. I do believe so many leaders have abused their power. I have watched that abuse up close, twice, in the last three years. A recent dive into the invaluable role of civic leadership in fostering civic engagement and advocating for social change got me reflecting on how profoundly impactful such initiatives can be. Civic leadership goes beyond political positions—it's about empowering citizens to take charge and make a difference in their communities. From my own experiences, whether it's organizing a local cleanup or leading a community forum, the skills and connections developed through civic engagement are irreplaceable. Each action, no matter how small, builds towards a collective strength capable of monumental transformations. The article reminded me of historical movements like the Civil Rights Movement and Women's Suffrage. These movements were driven by citizens who stood up, led by example, and weren't afraid to demand change. Their leadership reshaped societies! ??
