Studying accounting all those years ago if you told me I'd be recruiting crew for a clients luxury yacht one day I'd have never have believed you. As we welcome a new captain to the Oneworld team, I've been reflecting on the recruitment process. Finding the right accountant? That's relatively straightforward. But recruiting for maritime roles has been a different story! It’s not uncommon for our Charter Manager to say, "No they crashed into a bridge," or "They don’t have their COLK or some other maritime certification." For writing the Job ad I used Chat GPT however reviewing CVs still needed a human's knowledge of all the industry goss. This experience has deepened my appreciation for what accountants do best: navigating change, conducting research, and developing solutions. These skills are invaluable, especially when dealing with the unexpected. While we knew fairly early on that venues would be critical for us , we earned close to nothing from the category for the majority of our tenure . We could see the customer demand on the platform- it was slowly becoming the #1 category in terms of demand , but the revenue just wouldn’t shape up . We threw every possible model at it - transactional / subscription / assisted visits/ lead wallets / packages / booking amounts etc but no matter what , the lack of growth in venues was honestly infuriating and the metric would not budge for the first 6 years of our existence . In the last 2.5 years however , our venue revenue grew 500% . We expect venues to contribute to atleast 50% of our revenue in the future and become our most critical category . What did we do differently ? Nothing . We just persisted , chipping away bit by bit - Sometimes it’s really a matter of time for the market to mature , and ensure product market fit .

Imagine entering your industry's conference on the 3rd and final day and only ? of the audience is there. As the planner or event organizer, you are scratching your head trying to figure out where the people are. Sponsorship was at an all-time high, the decor was visually appealing, and you met your food and beverage minimums, so where are the people? Then the whispers become louder and you realize an insensitive comment made by a member of the senior executive team who was serving as the “Event Emcee” rubbed people the wrong way. The comment was never addressed leaving the audience feeling psychologically unsafe and they checked out mentally and physically… This could have been addressed and handled professionally had an pro been on the stage.
