Approximately 80% of eastern forests in the U.S. are privately owned, and these forests are critical habitat for migratory birds. A research project is studying the role private working forests play in supporting the conservation of bird species — particularly at-risk species — across the east coast. Researchers are mapping the distribution and movement of migratory songbirds across a large geographic area through seasons of breeding, migration, and overwintering. This project was made possible by the Wildlife Conservation Initiative (WCI). The WCI makes more than 44 million acres of forestland available for collaborative species initiatives, with government and private working forests working together.
