Service is one of the two needs of the spirit. But what qualifies as service? It's easy to conjur up images of non-profit boardrooms organizing giant food drives and revitalizing neighborhoods... These are ALL service, but sometimes we have to serve simpler so we can ensure we bring service into our daily lives. Moving your mind and body allows your vision to clear which allows you to see service opportunities day to day. Sometimes it's as simple as smiling at a stranger while you're on a walk. It can be being silly for you kids or telling your spouse authentically why you love and believe in them. Ultimately, you serve by bringing yourself into an environment and giving a blessing without a thought of reciprocity. Sometimes we need to first give that gift to ourselves so we can later give it to another because you can't serve with an empty cup. Some teams do one game a year fully immersed in activations around a non-profit. Others might do 3-4. And then there's the Texas Legends. Every home game fully themed out supporting a philanthropic mission. 100%. We don't wear our traditional home jerseys (although we are still forced to buy them - which puzzles me to this day). Why? Because we believe that sports are a platform to something bigger. A platform to lift people up. Bring people together from all backgrounds to have a shared experience together. A platform to give back. Not sometimes. Not part-time. 100% of the time. Only in Legends Land.

There is truth in this comment. If you're a company looking to make an impact within your local community by leveraging your employees' desire to use volunteer time, make sure it is worthwhile for both them AND the organization you are helping. If it is just two hours, please, PLEASE reconsider your time commitment! As an organizer on projects such as these, I can tell you that the first 30 to 45 minutes a company volunteer day is spent just herding the cats, introductions, going over safety instructions, and doing photo ops. If that leaves just 75 to 90 minutes to actually work, your company's staff won't feel like it was worth their time. The employees WANT to get their hands dirty! They WANT to do something that isn't looking at spreadsheets or emails! And most of all, they WANT to know that when they leave later that day, they can say they made a difference. And you know what they say: "You've GOT to give the people what they WANT!" #volunteering #activism
