Exactly 50 years ago, the Safe Drinking Water Act was signed into law to protect public health. Thanks to U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act loan, the City is able to invest in long-term improvements to Portland’s water system while saving customers millions of dollars.?? ? The $319 million loan will help fund the Bull Run Treatment projects, including the filtration facility now in construction. This project will not only help us meet drinking water standards, but it will also create thousands of construction jobs, save ratepayers money, and prepare us for climate change risks.?? ?? For anyone with an interest in the disaster that are the UK’s water companies (is Thames Water just the tip of the iceberg?), the state of our sewerage system, the mess of our rivers and coasts, the problems inflicted by industrial ag, the lack of foresight in modern transport infra and housing dev, plus the power of nature-based solutions (NBS) to improve river catchments, take a look at the writings of Professor Sir Dieter Helm. In a collection of short essays, he lays bear the issues and offers a range of solutions to fix market failure and regulatory challenge: https://lnkd.in/ev4vCKfB https://lnkd.in/eUjyeWj9 https://lnkd.in/eCNwbBjQ In brief, a new regulatory approach, realistic bills, appropriate treatment of capital maintenance, separation of water provision and sewerage services, restored river catchments, and just say no to massive tanks. Water is a precious resource and should be treated as such! And the best bit? It can all be done at a lower and reasonable cost #rivers #watercompanies #sewerage #naturebasedsolutions #NBS

It shouldn't be hard to follow drinking water infrastructure projects from application to funding, but right now we're using a leaky funnel. Fortunately, the solution is simple — using unique IDs consistently (and some states already do)! Easily tracking projects across datasets would transform our understanding of who is benefiting from investments and whether funding is going where it is most needed.
Phil Cork explores how we can more equitably and effectively expand access to clean drinking water by adding a unique ID to Drinking Water State Revolving Funds (DWSRF) data. Read the blog to learn more about how this addition could transform our ability to track drinking water infrastructure investments. ??:?https://lnkd.in/enuS4Gqm

Across the nation, outdated water systems fail to provide affordable, safe drinking water to millions of people, particularly in communities of color and communities with low incomes. From lead contamination to inadequate stormwater management, these problems are becoming more urgent—and more costly. ? ? The good news is that solutions are in sight!?The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act allocated more than $50B for crucial water infrastructure updates, distributed through state revolving funds. Communities across the country can apply for funds—and funders and impact investors can support them so they have the resources and staff time to do so.? ? In a blog post for the The Joyce Foundation, our team director Kimberlee Cornett, RWJF Senior Program Officer Pamela Russo, and RWJF consultants Radhika Fox and Rebecca Morley highlight a path forward: directing federal dollars for water infrastructure to the places that need them most, now.? ?
