Different companies need different Finance departments. Some companies will need Finance to act like policeman and strong gatekeepers. Some companies will need Finance to have a light touch. Some companies will need Finance to focus on controlling, others on business partnering and decision making and others on fundraising. It's important that the Finance team is right for the time. Great Finance teams are built with people who are resilient and flexible and can operate successfully across time as the company's needs change. Some people can't do this and can't operate through the changes over time. That's OK - those people are still valuable finance professionals, they personally and the leaders, need to understand that and together make sure they are best placed to thrive, whether in their current role/company or in a different place at a different stage where their skills, talents and experience will be best utilized.
