Really interesting results from South Cambridgeshire District councils 4 day week trial: Staff turnover fell by 39%, helping save £371,500 in a year, mostly on agency staff costs. Planning applications approved quicker. Reduction in the time required to process changes in benefit claims. In fact improved performance was noted in 11 out of 24 key functions. Only 2 areas saw reduced metrics and one of those was timely collection of council rents. Largely put down to tenants ability to pay rather than the function of the council. I know there are lots of people who aren’t a fan of the 4 days week (for many reasons) but I’m increasingly convinced that it’s something employers of all stripes should be considering for their workforces. Especially for teams who can’t work remotely or don’t have flexibility on when tasks are completed. #Workplace #futureofwork

Dear Nicola I empathize with the cultural angst and sense of loss that you must feel with the lack of people on your eponymous street in once capital city of Wellington. The cries of your supporters who own the towers as their tenants shut up shop must feel harsh given all you have done to ensure their survival. The axing of ghost cycleways (and fairies,) not yet built or nowhere near the shops that shut because of them, was a master stroke to support the small business folk.. Reducing public transport to make it harder for people to come to town without having to pay landowners for parking was brilliant and had the added-value of supporting those overseas investors who are rushing to invest in the fossil fuel industry and its associated servicing. They are now flocking like magpies to populate the Cafe's and bars of Willis Street, tipping thousand dollar bills to coffee waiters. And now, colourblind targeting of public servants for working from home, forcing them to their offices, so that the streets are full to overflowing with coffee and craft beer drinkers... your brilliance in finding new ways to subsidise business knows no bounds! Government departments who met your cutback targets by reducing their office space, will have to rent more space from tower owners to office all their staff! No longer can the Departments rely on their wfh staff to pay their own office cleaning, power and rental space. Instead, the departments and ministries will have to find money to pay all those costs, driving economic growth! The formerly wfh staff who cannot afford cars and carparking will have to shift to Wellington in order to get to work on time. This will boost the coffers of all those worthy and needy landlords. i respectfully suggest that your next move should be to ban part-time work. That way all those skyvers who work 4 day weeks will have to work all 5 days, refilling the Willis Street's empty Mondays and Fridays. In fact why stop there? Let's make 7 day weeks compulsory! Yours With the greatest regard.

Although research and surveys highlight home working has been beneficial for many employers reporting positive results and better work-life balance. I think it depends on the trade you are in, home working needs to be exercised with caution, it depends on your personal circumstances too. Home working now and again is necessary for deep thinking, strategy and planning, writing a report where you require that head room and space without office distractions. Its being practical and sensible as it may not work for all trades and sectors. I would still raise the question how many people are really working from home - Over the past two/three years I have spent some time out there lodging from coffee places to community venues providing co-working spaces, to hotels/combined leisure facilities with co working hubs. Many people -are they really at home or out-working from these locations is the question I would ask. In one combined hotel/leisure facilities and restaurant plus co-working space created during covid I bumped into a whole team from a charity hot-desking as many people struggle to work from home. It was first come first basis for the larger desk space if you needed two monitors and a single coffee desk and chair for those who missed out. Parking discounts were applied. I have met many people out there with their laptops and headphones in coffee spaces co working hubs from universities to staff who work in local hospitals/staff from charities and many private companies. https://lnkd.in/eCpF-cWb

For all the #caretakers out there, what’s something your employer could do to support you? Or what’s something they’re already doing? An add to the original post: What are the actual policies that are in place to support caretakers? #workplace #workforce

Poor planning under County Plans / NPF promotes poorer work-life outcomes & more commute time seeing less time with family & friends & higher emissions due to car & transport use. The sooner we get proper outcomes in Planning in Ireland, the better for young & society
House prices prompt growing number of young professionals to live in Newry while commuting to Dublin: Post-pandemic remote working, cheaper rents and a lower cost of living are among the reasons for Southern-based workers to rent or buy in the town

A really interesting approach and study here. Headlines findings are pretty positive; staff satisfaction and wellbeing improvements perhaps not so surprising but also boosts to some service performance and efficiencies. Impressive that they stuck to their guns despite political pressure to cease. Will be interesting to see if there’s other LAs, or indeed, employers considering changes to the working week!
South Cambridgeshire District Council said it found that cutting staff hours reduced turnover has reduced and led to improved or maintained performance in nearly all areas https://lnkd.in/eEwx4-9T

Interesting to see this response from the government on public service workers considering my recent posts on hyrbid environments, flexible work. This is so short sighted. Once again reference to "statistics" or "evidence" with no actual specifics to back it up. I think you will find plenty of evidence I have previously referred to suggesting a flexible work environment is actually the ideal. The psychological, social and cultural benefits of teams working together face to face is very real. However, when we mix this with the flexibility of working from home some days of the week we find the ideal. How do those of you who work remotely maintain your environment? How do you ensure you aren't always working by yourself in a room at home? This is the reality of my own work environment, but I can work in school visits if I want to. Ashburton College is my base school so I can go there anytime I want. I also work from cafes and libraries where I need to change it up. What do you do? https://lnkd.in/gV5BdMw9
