“If the state works with health care providers to ensure every Vermonter gets the right care, when they need it, in the right setting, we can save untold millions of dollars. This is the quickest path to affordability, aside from growing our population of working Vermonters and tax base. Instead, recent [Green Mountain Care Board] budget decisions penalized University of Vermont Medical Center for providing more lifesaving care to our patients last year than allowed, even though the net financial result of that care caused us to lose money. As Vermonters, we face an important decision: will the path forward be defined by the rapid erosion of our safety net health care system, or will we demand actions that foster the stability necessary to build a stronger, more sustainable system of care?” Jason Williams, UVM Health Network’s chief external relations officer, on what’s at stake for the future of health care in Vermont and the pressing need for meaningful partnerships to deliver sustainable solutions.

I encourage reading this insightful piece. We all agree that health care is expensive and the system in Vermont and nationally is convoluted. The sound bites and headlines regurgitated in social settings, campuses, workplaces, kitchen tables create discouragement, erode trust and perpetuates the sense that the system is irretrievably broken. If we look at the history of our healthcare system, the conversation has been going on since the early part of the 20th century. The pattern of how we got here is easy to spot…countless well-intentioned actions built a tangled and messy system in an effort to advance patient care, science, technology, and above all make it accessible. Fast forward to an aging population, social determinants of health, marginalized people, demands for fair compensation, rigors and expense of all medical education, too few physicians and nurses, shortage of facilities to care for the elderly, on and on and here we are. Rather than blame hospitals and health care leaders, make baseless accusations of greed, let’s focus on how to really move through this time, at least 30 years, with careful and thoughtful remedies. I have the privilege of working with health care leaders every day and what I am witness to are highly empathetic, medically trained, business savvy people who work every day to save lives and want to keep their communities healthy, both with health care access and economic strength.?

Yesterday CommonWealth Beacon published my perspective on the evolving Steward Health Care crisis in Massachusetts. As our state leaders contend with the many uncertainties ahead and influence the future of these critical access points, #healthequity and health equity leaders must be at the center of the discussion. Amidst the turmoil, we have the opportunity to impact three important determinants central to health: 1. Creating and maintaining opportunities for health - economic stability 2. Preserving access to care - in this case acute care 3. Developing or re-evaluating systems that ensure all residents receive highest quality of care Let's seize it. #healthequity #healthcare #privateequity #healthcarecosts https://lnkd.in/e9mFyKhu

Today is National Healthcare Decisions Day. It's a day that might pass unnoticed by many, but for seniors and their families, it can be one of the most critical waypoints in life's journey. In my work with seniors in South Central Pennsylvania, there's a conversation I've seen make all the difference: advance care planning. It's not just about healthcare. It's about ensuring that the golden years are lived on one's own terms, with dignity and choice. Here's why this day should matter to you: ?? Clarity: Advance care planning clarifies your wishes, so your family isn't left guessing. ??? Protection: It protects your rights to receive (or not receive) the kind of care you want. ?? Support: It provides support to your family or allies during what can be a stressful decision-making time. ?? Peace of Mind: It grants you and everyone involved the irreplaceable peace of mind that comes with knowing there's a plan. Through the stages of guiding families in downsizing or transitioning, I've learned this: talking about healthcare decisions isn't always easy, but it is always necessary. By opening up these discussions, we pave the way for not just health, but holistic well-being. Let's use today to start that conversation. Have you discussed your care preferences with your loved ones? #AdvanceCarePlanning #NationalHealthcareDecisionsDay #SeniorsHealth #FamilyConversations #EmpathyInCare

?? Navigating Texas Healthcare: Challenges & Opportunities As I reflect on the current healthcare landscape in our state, I'm struck by the immense forces at play: both challenges that must be tackled and opportunities to be seized. On one side, we have factors limiting access like provider shortages, especially in rural areas, and high costs putting quality care out of reach for too many Texans. We're also grappling with public health crises from maternal mortality to mental health. Yet we simultaneously see powerful counter-forces emerging: Telehealth capabilities are expanding care options ??, community clinics and mobile health units are innovating to meet people where they are ??, and a growing recognition that our zip code shouldn't determine our health prospects ??. At the core, accessible healthcare is not a luxury - it's a fundamental human right and bedrock for thriving communities. When people can proactively manage their well-being, it unlocks their full potential ??. I invite you to share your perspective: What forces, whether obstacles or opportunities, are you seeing impact healthcare access in your part of Texas? What solutions could we prioritize to ensure every Texan can obtain the care they need? By uplifting all voices, we can construct a more equitable and supportive healthcare system across our diverse state. The health of our people and communities depends on it. #HealthcareForAll #TexasInnovation

Yesterday, on World Health Day, we reflected on the theme 'My Health, My Right', emphasizing universal access to vital services like healthcare, education, clean water, and housing. Shockingly, over half the world's population lacked essential health coverage in 2021, leaving many vulnerable. Working for a nursing agency addressing healthcare staffing shortages, we've seen first-hand how crucial equitable access to healthcare is, especially for the elderly. It's not just about treating illnesses or getting the job done; it's about honouring the inherent dignity and rights of every individual. Throughout history, people have fought for their right to health, striving for equity and fairness. The World Health Organization urges us to champion these rights—access to quality care, non-discrimination, privacy, and more. Let's unite to ensure these rights become a reality for all, this World Health Day and beyond. Aktrapid Nursing #worldhealthday #nursingagency #WHO #qualitycare

?? California's county-based health plans are on the rise, serving as a cornerstone in managing care for Medi-Cal enrollees and more. These plans now cover 1 in 5 Californians! ?? Recent data shows a significant 10.4% enrollment increase in 2023, with 9.8 million members. This surge is largely attributed to continuous coverage policies during the COVID-19 emergency. ?? Financially, these plans saw a $37 billion revenue in 2022, with a notable growth over the past two years. Their financial health is robust, with margins more than doubling since 2018. ?? The secret? A strategic balance of medical expense growth and revenue increase, ensuring a stronger, more resilient health care system for Californians.
