I encourage reading this insightful piece. We all agree that health care is expensive and the system in Vermont and nationally is convoluted. The sound bites and headlines regurgitated in social settings, campuses, workplaces, kitchen tables create discouragement, erode trust and perpetuates the sense that the system is irretrievably broken. If we look at the history of our healthcare system, the conversation has been going on since the early part of the 20th century. The pattern of how we got here is easy to spot…countless well-intentioned actions built a tangled and messy system in an effort to advance patient care, science, technology, and above all make it accessible. Fast forward to an aging population, social determinants of health, marginalized people, demands for fair compensation, rigors and expense of all medical education, too few physicians and nurses, shortage of facilities to care for the elderly, on and on and here we are. Rather than blame hospitals and health care leaders, make baseless accusations of greed, let’s focus on how to really move through this time, at least 30 years, with careful and thoughtful remedies. I have the privilege of working with health care leaders every day and what I am witness to are highly empathetic, medically trained, business savvy people who work every day to save lives and want to keep their communities healthy, both with health care access and economic strength.?

Yesterday CommonWealth Beacon published my perspective on the evolving Steward Health Care crisis in Massachusetts. As our state leaders contend with the many uncertainties ahead and influence the future of these critical access points, #healthequity and health equity leaders must be at the center of the discussion. Amidst the turmoil, we have the opportunity to impact three important determinants central to health: 1. Creating and maintaining opportunities for health - economic stability 2. Preserving access to care - in this case acute care 3. On one side, we have factors limiting access like provider shortages, especially in rural areas, and high costs putting quality care out of reach for too many Texans. We're also grappling with public health crises from maternal mortality to mental health. Yet we simultaneously see powerful counter-forces emerging: Telehealth capabilities are expanding care options ??, community clinics and mobile health units are innovating to meet people where they are ??, and a growing recognition that our zip code shouldn't determine our health prospects ??. At the core, accessible healthcare is not a luxury - it's a fundamental human right and bedrock for thriving communities. When people can proactively manage their well-being, it unlocks their full potential ??. Yesterday, on World Health Day, we reflected on the theme 'My Health, My Right', emphasizing universal access to vital services like healthcare, education, clean water, and housing. Shockingly, over half the world's population lacked essential health coverage in 2021, leaving many vulnerable. Working for a nursing agency addressing healthcare staffing shortages, we've seen first-hand how crucial equitable access to healthcare is, especially for the elderly. It's not just about treating illnesses or getting the job done; it's about honouring the inherent dignity and rights of every individual. Throughout history, people have fought for their right to health, striving for equity and fairness. The World Health Organization urges us to champion these rights—access to quality care, non-discrimination, privacy, and more. Recent data shows a significant 10.4% enrollment increase in 2023, with 9.8 million members. This surge is largely attributed to continuous coverage policies during the COVID-19 emergency. ?? Financially, these plans saw a $37 billion revenue in 2022, with a notable growth over the past two years. Their financial health is robust, with margins more than doubling since 2018. ?? The secret?
