I used to think that leadership was rarified air. Like so many others, I’d accepted that some people just didn’t have that leadership potential. And I’d accepted I was one of those people that didn’t have the gene. But staying cynical is a choice, and it’s often an easy out. It lets us off the hook for taking responsibility, exerting the emotional labour, and doing the hard work of making a change. I’ve since come to realize that everyone has leadership potential—we’ve all got the gene. It’s part of being human, which means we can figure it all out together. You don’t have to use that potential if you don’t want to, because it is hard work. But now I know that’s a choice too. The scary part isn’t whether or not you have the potential to be a leader. The scary part is realizing you’re already a leader—and that you’ve got to choose action and risk failure. The good news is that’s part of being human too. But don’t take it from me, take it from Ms. Goodall…
