The recent SNL TikTok skit is one of the smartest media moves I've seen in a long time. Let me break it down. (If you haven't seen it yet, the sketch hilariously sums up TikTok culture. They poke fun at Trad Wives, Keith Lee, the popular food reviewer, Bethenny Frankel, and a host of other TikTok stars.) This comedic take highlights a broader challenge for traditional media: finding ways to keep up with the speed of social media. Before social media, traditional media was the one initiating conversations. What SNL did was brilliantly flip the script. Instead of simply interviewing a TikTok star or reporting on trends—an approach typical of traditional media—they leaned into their strength and talent: humor. By using their comedic format, they captured the essence of scrolling through TikTok, reflecting the shared experience that everyone talks about but traditional media has largely overlooked. In that skit, they became part of the audience, engaging with the culture rather than just commenting on it. At first, I resisted it. “Why don’t you try TikTok to promote your business?” A few friends had suggested it.?But I was sceptical... TikTok is for kids. It’s cat videos and silly dances and people doing stupid things. It’s trivial, shallow, just for fun and giggles. How could I possibly promote my training business on there? But the more people suggested it, the more I was intrigued.? Eventually, I relented. I had a go. I put together a short video – “3 skills you need to be an amazing leader in the 21st?Century” and posted it. Within just 3 days of launching, I’d had…293 views and 7 likes. I don’t think that counts as viral. But it’s a start! Of course, you can’t gauge success based on one video. It takes time to build an audience. Even the biggest influencers with millions of followers were not a success overnight. Anyway, let’s see if this works. If you’re on TikTok, why not give me a follow? I’ll be sharing lots of tips of leadership, communication, and so much more. And maybe, who knows, some silly stuff! #tiktok #leadershipskills #commumunication
