Successfully innovating optoelectronic semiconductor devices depends a lot on moving charges and excitons—electron-hole pairs—in specified directions for the purpose of creating fuels or electricity. Deriving inspiration from the natural process of photosynthesis, NREL researchers Alexis Myers and Melissa Gish developed a mixed-dimensionality (2D/1D/2D) trilayer of semiconductors to enable exciton dissociation. This exciton dissociation step, a splitting and spatial separation of excited electron–hole pairs, is a microscopic process that is fundamental to the performance of #photovoltaic systems. Vanguard International Semiconductor Company (VIS) and Episil Technologies Inc (5326) have announced a joint venture to build an 8-inch fab for producing silicon carbide (SiC) chips. SiC chips, known for higher efficiency and lower energy loss, are key components in electric vehicles, AI data centers, green energy, and industrial devices. VIS is set to acquire a 13% stake in Episil for NT$2.48 billion (US$77.1 million), subscribing to 50 million shares at NT$49.6 each—reflecting a 20% discount on Episil’s closing price. The proceeds will fund the new fab, expected to begin production in late 2026. This collaboration will strengthen Vanguard’s product portfolio by integrating SiC Technology GmbH with its existing compound semiconductors like gallium nitride (GaN). Vanguard also aims to start pilot production of second-generation GaN chips by year-end. This move positions both companies to meet growing demand for energy-efficient semiconductors. ?? Exciting news from Crystal Sonic! They have been awarded a $1,000,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the National Science Foundation subagency. This award is part of the Small Business Innovation Research Program Phase I Action. #SBIR #STTR ?? The project, titled 'Sonic Lift-Off (SLO) for Lower Cost Wide Bandgap Devices,' aims to accelerate the adoption of next-generation semiconductor power devices based on Gallium Nitride (GaN). By significantly lowering production costs, this innovation could save 120 TWh/year, equivalent to the energy consumption of a country like Switzerland. The project will develop a process that allows multiple re-use of GaN wafers, reducing both energy consumption and pollution in the manufacturing process. #Innovation #Tech ?? This cooperative agreement will last for 1 year and 11 months, starting on September 15, 2024, and ending on August 31, 2026.
