Yesterday, we had a fantastic time hosting a social for Polk County area educators to introduce them to our annual Law Day event. This year's theme, "E Pluribus Unum" (Out of Many, One), is a powerful reminder of the unity that can be forged through diversity and the rule of law. We're excited to invite Polk County students in grades K-12 to participate in our Law Day celebration by showcasing their creativity through visual arts, music, essays, and poetry. This is a wonderful opportunity for young people to learn about the law, express themselves, and win prizes! The Law Day celebration and recognition event will be held at the Iowa Supreme Court on May 1, 2025. Let's inspire the next generation of legal minds!

The American Association of Law Schools’ Committee on Recruitment and Retention of Minority Law Teachers and Students hosted the session: “Difficult Conversions: Ideas for Navigating Conflicts in a Polarized World.” In our polarized times, many law schools and universities have had to work hard both to encourage free expression and maintain students' sense of safety and support. Notable incidents, over Israel-Palestine and DEl initiatives to name two, have tested law schools' capacity to strike that balance. However, many law schools have successfully navigated these challenges. This panel brought together faculty and administrators whose efforts have resulted in community conversations that embrace respectful disagreement while giving most students the sense that they are supported, included, and valued.

Penn State Dickinson Law Dean and Donald J. Farage Professor of Law Danielle Conway recently wrote an article entitled “Institutional Antiracism and Critical Pedagogy: A Quantum Leap Forward for Legal Education and the Legal Academy.” The article was solicited and published by the University of Alabama Law Review. The article sets forth the role legal education, the legal academy, and the legal profession have played—and continue to play—in scaffolding ascriptive hierarchies that perpetuate systemic inequality, subordination, and oppression in American society. The article offers approaches to dismantle these hierarchies. Read the article here:?https://lnkd.in/eszBDzkb

Kicking off the new year with our first spotlight post. Our first article published in Volume 73, Issue 1 is “Custodians of Civility, Defenders of Democracy, Guardians of Justice” by Dean Lee Fisher. Dean Fisher describes this piece as “a call to action for legal educators, law students, and lawyers. Our law students are entering law school at a defining moment when democracy is being put to the test and many of our most cherished values as Americans are at a crossroads. Among them are truth, civility, the rule of law and democracy itself. We strive to be a law school that welcomes and encourages diverse viewpoints but where we share common values. Our first year students took a pledge on their first day of law school to adhere to four core values - Professional Integrity, Civil Discourse, Academic Effort, and Living Justice. Our mandate is to educate a new generation of leaders who use these core values as their moral compass and who use their special knowledge and skills to make America a place where we strive to find common ground and work for a better common destiny. We tell our law students to think of themselves as future custodians of civility, defenders of democracy, and guardians of justice.” Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/ewXuWEJe
