Title: Re-Focusing Law Enforcement on Public Safety In a recent article, the LAPD union highlighted a crucial point about the role of law enforcement: police officers are trained for public safety, not mental health interventions or social work. Yet, too often, they’re called into situations outside this scope. When officers are pulled away from their primary duties to handle mental health crises or social issues, their ability to focus on community safety—like addressing rising pedestrian injuries and promoting safe driving—is compromised. Redirecting these responsibilities to trained professionals in mental health and social services can allow police to concentrate on what they do best. Public safety is strongest when we let each group focus on their expertise. Police, mental health experts, and social workers all bring unique, essential skills, and when each can focus on their specialty, our communities benefit. Your safety is our priority. To help create a safer neighbourhood, Council voted yesterday to establish a Community Policing Centre in Gastown. Residents and businesses in the Gastown and Hastings Crossing areas have expressed an urgent need to address issues of street disorder and crime. The establishment of a community policing centre for the area has been identified as a key step toward increasing law enforcement visibility and enhancing the sense of security and safety for all. Council also acknowledged that addressing the root causes of the challenges facing the area must also include initiatives such as: ? Implementing mandatory care for those suffering from extreme mental health and addiction issues. ? Addressing federal bail reform for repeat offenders. ? Adopting new measures to prevent the influx of toxic drugs into the community. #vancouver #vanpoli

Many incarcerated workers are forced to do incredibly dangerous jobs—from fighting wildfires to removing lead paint—and yet they are explicitly excluded from many of the workplace safety, labor, anti-discrimination laws and benefits that protect other U.S. workers. This information came to light through many people advocating in this space and also #whistleblowers reporting the risks. This includes reports to the Disability Royal Commission, to the Human Rights Commission and to the Children’s Commissioner. Brave health care professionals, counsellors, those working in the system raising concerns through the appropriate channels. Lawyers and community advocates. People in the systems wanting change. So reflect on this if you are the HR manager shutting down the employee who speaks up. If you are the operations manager asking the “canary in the coal mine” to step out of the continuous improvement workshops because they are raising too many risks. Reflect on this if you are the EAP provider and you are counselling the employees working in the systems with burnout who are so distressed by what they are witnessing. And reflect on this if you are the lawyer they hire to fire the #whistleblower. And reflect on this if you are the corrupt politician who knows the reports are being edited. The whistleblowers are being threatened into silence and having their credibility destroyed.
