Thrilled to see research I co-authored described in detail in The Economist! We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of counter-disinformation strategies that could improve our information environment, for the International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE) https://lnkd.in/gKeDwqMk The Economist article gives a broad overview on the current state of strategies for countering disinformation. My PhD supervisor Phil Howard summarizes the current trend against research data access and proposes solutions, and Jakob Ohme at the Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society diagnoses the success rate of data access applications to the EU Digital Services Act. The article even talks about Taiwan’s whole-of-society approach to countering disinformation, something Ukraine can teach the world about too! ???? Response to issues highlighted - our #policyexperiment (part of #Pacific Digital Democracy Initiative) This article from The Economist provides a useful global context to some of our ongoing works on #misinformation / #disinformation. Context: 1. #WEF Global #Risks Report highlights the growing risks posed by misinformation and disinformation, underscoring the urgency of addressing this issue on a global scale (its in the top 10 risks for 2024-2025). The article notes: 2. The U.S. State Department uncovered a Russian disinformation campaign targeting health programs in Africa, highlighting the ongoing threat of disinformation. #Countermeasures such as #prebunking, #contentlabeling, #factchecking, #contentmoderation, and #medialiteracy education have been found to be effective in fighting disinformation. 3. Research on disinformation is limited by the #lackofaccess to #data held by tech companies. A better example is #EU's #DigitalServicesAct that requires platforms to make data available to researchers, but compliance has been limited so far. 4. #Taiwan is presented as a positive example of a coordinated approach to fighting disinformation, involving collaboration between #civilsociety, #techplatforms, the government, and media. Our Policy Experiment -"#Information #Integrity in the #Pacific": 5. We are: a) Identifying the most prevalent forms and manifestations of information pollution and #hatespeech in the region b) Mapping the hubs and tools used to spread this content c) Assess the impact on #individuals, #communities, and #society, considering factors such as #income, #age, #gender, #disability, #religiousbelief, #ethnicity, and #digitalliteracy d) Analyzing the influence of #cultural, #political, and #social contexts, as well as external factors and actors e) Evaluating existing strategies and responses by governments, CSOs, private sector, and academia f) Providing foresight on how trends may develop in the coming years, given the rapid increase in access to digital technologies 6. In sum As we strive to protect the integrity of our #democraticsystems and foster #socialcohesion, it is crucial to prioritize coordination, data sharing, and context-specific approaches. Our policy experiment in the Pacific region seeks to contribute to this endeavor by offering a thorough understanding of the #informationlandscape and guiding the development of targeted measures to address information pollution and hate speech. By focusing on the unique challenges and opportunities present in the region, we aim to create a more resilient and inclusive #digitaldemocracy that benefits all members of society. The results of our #DSA40 Data Access Tracker, run by the Weizenbaum-Institut and the European New School of Digital Studies (https://lnkd.in/ehFAr4iv), have been featured in The Economist's new cover story on the fight against disinformation. The fight for platform data access is real - to study disinformation, but also all the other relevant risks that digital environments can pose to societies. DSA enforcement needs to correct the current reluctance of platforms to make public (!) data available to study systemic risks. More importantly, it would be great if platforms understood that while some research may reveal some inconvenient truths for them, it is ultimately in their own interest to know about them - and to let researchers discover these risks and develop mitigation strategies. It seems that the COVID-19 Response Inquiry is being quite considered and thoughtful in its approach and providing updates as its engagement progresses. This update on a roundtable on communicating the science and complex messages is pretty handy and I expect resonates with many of us who worked across government and with the community during this time.
