Exactly…and as accountants it’s pretty darn easy to do! Take if you want to make 100k, bump that up like 30% for conservative costs-130k then divide by number of hours ie 2,000 that means you need to make at least $65 an hour. That sounds “easy” but it’s not when new. I see practitioners making as little as truly $3-$13 an hour when you factor in admin time and too low of rates. Value pricing, specifically the roi method of value pricing, solves all of this. If you can save your client money, value price to where the client is still getting a 200-300%+ annual ROI and you’re pricing three to five times higher than peers but the client will ADORE you for showing them your a return on individual!!!! The math = 100 clients giving you 300k instead of 100k, by bringing added value for just a little extra time per client as it’s mainly in learned knowledge and expertise. The simplest breakdown is to figure out how much you want to make MINIMUM per client, ie 3k x 100 clients to get to the 300k, then make sure your time is blocked accordingly! I had an interesting call yesterday with an individual that's considering hiring a bookkeeping firm for his small business... This individual started a new service business almost a year ago. The business has grown to approximately $250k in annual revenue. He felt like he needed to hire a bookkeeper, but was unsure if he could commit to the monthly cost. I learned that the average size of a job he would perform would be $3k - $4k. In a busy month he would expect to complete 10 jobs and a slow month would be 4-5. I asked him to do three things: 1) Add an extra $75 to each quote he sends out. 2) Open a savings account and each month transfer transfer the extra amount from each quote to the savings account. 3) Meet with me again in 6 months If he sticks with my recommendations for 6 months this experience should generate a few outcomes: a) Recognition that the Clients of the Business (Not the Owner) are responsible for paying the cost of the bookkeeper. b) Confidence that the business will generate the funds necessary to pay for this cost. c) Commitment to hiring the right bookkeeping professional, not the most affordable bookkeeper.
