Over the weekend, I read an incredible series of articles about the future of AI - where it began, how rapid development is, and implicaitons for the future. A professor friend of mine and I often discuss unexpected outcomes from tech or policy - this paper discusses those as well, including US foreign policy, military, national security concerns and many others. A very dense, but worthwhile read from Leopold Aschenbrenner. SITUATIONAL AWARENESS: The Decade Ahead https://lnkd.in/gH3fVmtR

A lot going on this convo. Important understanding of the landscape of modernization under the constraints of traditional requirements based contracts adjacent innovation not bolted onto traditional contract vehicles. ? of ?? is not an option.
My conversation with Tyler Cowen was a true tour de force! We cover AI and the diffusion of power, the dynamics of hypersonic weapons, future of drone warfare, inspector generals, how I got a security clearance despite being gay, and of course, Unit X: How the Pentagon and Silicon Valley are Transforming the Future of War, co-authored with Raj S.. I also share the hack we used to make the DIUx office dog friendly. This was my absolutely favorite pod of the book tour, along with NYTs Hard Fork, Arm Chair Expert with Dax Shepard, and Lawfare. Check out this discussion on implementing AI into your organization.
We sat down with Robin Braun, vice president of artificial intelligence and data Strategy at Government Acquisitions, Harry "Butch" Dreany, Ph.D., artificial intelligence development lead at the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory I Futures Directorate, and Jeff Winterich, account chief technologist for the Department of Defense at Hewlett Packard Enterprise, in a new webinar to discuss #GenAI use cases and best practices for large language models. Watch the new webinar “Federal Agencies Start Small to Speed LLM Innovation” to hear how agencies can safely experiment with #GenAI applications to identify mission-critical use cases – ranging from citizen engagement to cross- or interagency search – and then move into pilot programs: https://bit.ly/48GQcDd

Dynamic conversations at today's expo on AI - "AI Expo for National Competitiveness" - Day 1 - lots of important conversations about responsible innovation, architecture, and policy implications. I was not sure who would also be there, but was delighted to spend time with AI policy visionaries Carole House and Elham Tabassi, as well as to run in to friends old an new including Marija Spai? White, tech guru Theo Ogbebor, cyber security and AI expert Andrew G., Raphael Socher, Luc Hale, and AI coder/entrepreneur Stevens Cadet, and more. Sharing my key take-aways on today's panel on AI and national security moderated by Andrew Ross Sorkin: -- Next 10-15 years key key: General Mark A. Milley: noted that US needs to innovate to keep competitiveness in a global economy as well as national security standing; the next 10-15 years are crucial and countries are in a "footrace right now" on AI; importance of understanding the operational environment; shift to urban centers and implications on global conflict; race of nations to innovate in AI space; --Framework of AI: On question of open source verses closed source AI: Eric Schmidt noted how fast open source is working; that we don’t know where this ends up, and that opponents get open source at the same time, but if you are the architect you stay ahead, and the strategy is how far the open source can keep pushing forward. --?Importance of Manufacture/Supply Chain: Palantir Technologies CEO Alex Carp spoke about how it is crucial to have the amount of hardware we need;??to organize manufacturing and supply chain in a way that works, to have a zone where software can work. Overall, lots of great conversations and looking forward to collaboration across industries on day 2 of the AI expo.

NATO and Prototyping Warfare - a short, crisp and very insightful text! Thanks! Arnel David and Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Prototyping, based on rapid iteration and experimentation, offers a dynamic alternative to traditional development models. Enhanced prototyping can leverage NATO's diverse talent across 32 nations in three ways: ?? Increase risk tolerance and fund commanders to experiment with commercial technologies outside the standard program. Early testing and prototyping are vital for competitive advantages in modern conflict. ?? Expand the use of digital gaming and simulation technologies for regular testing of concepts and plans. These tools enhance AI applications and improve decision-making and warfighting systems. ?? Actively adopt and integrate AI technologies. Early adoption is crucial, and NATO should start testing AI tools, building on experiments like ScaleAI’s Donovan.

“Technology once an unmistakable comparative advantage of the liberal world order, now almost equally empowers those who seek it’s undoing” Christopher Kirchhoff I highly recommend the newly released "Unit X: How the Pentagon and Silicon Valley Are Transforming the Future of War." This book outlines the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) seemingly "simple and straightforward mission" to bridge the gap between Silicon Valley and the Pentagon. With the mission to arm troops with the best possible tech, the likes of Palantir Technologies, Anduril Industries, Shield AI, Saildrone and many more have disrupted and transformed the defense sector's culture, injecting it with the speed and innovation of silicon valley. The takeaway is clear: we must continue to ensure that cutting-edge technology reaches those who need it most, so our warfighters maintain their critical information and technology edge into the future.
