Swinging for students with disabilities.. They sit and watch the other children play at recess. The blacktop is such a familiar place. For most children it’s a time during the school day that is filled with laughter, and a release from structured learning. A chance to recharge and socialize. For them it’s a time of isolation. Recess is a simple reminder that their disability keeps them from running around. From having a normal childhood. That if only accessibility existed on the school playground then maybe they could laugh and play like the other kids. What do the other kids think of the disabled child that sits isolated from everyone else? What are they learning about people with disabilities? What if these wheels could roll onto the playground? What if there was a ramp to get onto the jungle gym? What if there was swing they could get on to? Feeling a sense of belonging is what every child needs and deserves. And when we grow up feeling like an outsider..what does that do to our self esteem? It’s more than a wheelchair swing…it’s a sense of belonging. It’s acceptance. #reels #trpswingchallenge #wheelchair #therecessproject #school #playground #advocacy #bethechange #equality #nonprofitorganization
