On November 24th, the incredible talents at VShojo came together for an unforgettable 24-hour fundraising stream benefiting Make-A-Wish America. Their efforts and the support of their amazing community raised over $117,000 to make dreams come true for children in need. ?? A huge thank you to everyone who donated, tuned in, and cheered them on—this is what happens when creativity and compassion collide. ??

Besides this being an amazing story; one that deserved its own post, there was talk of (at least) five other projects that will tell the story of rural perseverance and community excellence in Humboldt. And I have nowhere to tell these stories. What will it take for people to invest in rural content again? Because that is what it is; an investment of time and resources into ensuring these stories get told. I've heard over and over again in the past two years that there's no money for freelancing, but how else are organizations creating a strong news stream for their communities? We need more local content.
For the first time in a while I attended the Good Neighbour Store's Distribution Day here in Humboldt. For the past 32 years, the thrift store takes what they've made from a year of reselling gently used clothing and household items and distributes it to non-profit organizations throughout the Humboldt area. Today, 61 organizations received a collective $463,000, bringing the total amount of donations given over the past three decades to $5 million. As of this year, two organizations have now received over a million dollars each from GNS, a worthy milestone for amazing organizations. Many people spoke about GNS's humble beginnings and how far they've come. Congratulations to the Good Neighbour Store and all their volunteers.

Lovelight Solutions is thrilled to team up with Let There Be Light International to provide life changing solar lanterns to 1,000 families. It's amazing how much impact a $15 lantern can provide to a family living without access to electricity. Currently, families in off-grid communities in Uganda spend on average 30% of their income on light! Mostly in the form of kerosene which is unhealthy to breathe. We've been working with this fantastic org over the past 4 years as part of our commitment to donate 1% of our revenues to bring light to those that do not have access to electricity. The org is run by an amazing founder/executive director who takes no salary - maximizing the impact of donations. Your donation will fund a solar lantern for mothers that come to deliver a baby in a community health clinic (Lovelight Solutions is proud to have brought solar power to 6 of them). Most families deliver w/in the home which leads to high infant mortality.?Getting mothers to clinics where there is a lit environment saves lives. This program is also amazing for women's empowerment. Typically, everything of value is owned by the male.. now a mom comes home with a solar lantern that is extremely valuable and revolutionary for the family. Online fundraising campaigns, particularly time-pressured Giving Days, require bucket-loads of energy and organisation behind-the-scenes - so a little Friday Flattery for Jazz Kaur Sohal on her success last week, when so new in role! And some top tips to consider when planning an online giving campaign: ?? Create a compelling campaign webpage (with video!) to share your story ?? Segment your data and plan targeted comms, from warm-up to thank-yous ?? Secure your major supporters and match-donors well in advance ?? Test your emails, payment forms and other data capture tools before go live ?? Set up specific consent options in case people want to opt-out of giving day comms (but not from all your other lovely emails for the rest of the year!)

Crisis, such as the tragic fires in and around Ruidoso, reveal the character of people and businesses. Such as the extreme leadership of MATI’s Godfrey Enjady working tirelessly with friends, such as PVT’s James Meyers, to restore vital communications within and outside of their own service areas. Or the local businesses working together to meet the needs of those impacted. Local businesses matter and will be there when needed.
