According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2021, there were approximately 18 million veterans living in the United States. Today, we honor our brave family, friends, colleagues and community members who have served our country. Your service and sacrifices have helped shaped our nation. Happy Veteran's Day! PlanRVA offices are closed in observance. #VeteransDay #ThankAVeteran

Happy Veteran's Day weekend! I am not a veteran yet because I am still on active duty, but I will be a veteran at some point. So, I want to thank those that served at one point in uniform and have already shifted their service from military service to other noble types of service! Many aspects of our veteran population are important for us all to be cognizant of not just this weekend, but continually. Two of those aspects from this linked article are: 1) The share of the U.S. population with military experience has declined,?according to?data from the U.S. Census Bureau.?In 1980, about 18% of U.S. adults were veterans, but that share fell to 6% in 2022. 2) Fewer members of Congress have military experience than in the past,?according to?a Center analysis of the 118th Congress?conducted after the 2022 congressional elections. In the current Congress, 18% of representatives and 17% of senators are veterans, down drastically from just a few decades ago. I am not sure how much that percentage (% in Congress that are veterans) will change due to this year's elections, but regardless, one way to thank a veteran is to communicate with your Senators and Representatives to ensure that our ~16 million veterans are provided the resources and assistance they need in their individual circumstances (because all are unique). Remember, Veteran's Day is for those (both living and deceased) that have served in uniform in the past. Armed Forces Day (3rd Saturday each May) is for those still serving in uniform. And Memorial Day (last Monday of each May) is for those that died while serving in uniform. So, please consider taking some time to find one of those 16 million veterans (or just 6% of our population) and thank them for their service and see what they need from Congress.

I wrote a blog for The Center for Community Solutions on the decision by the U.S. Census to halt the publication of state-level hardship data. It's been an important source of information for any number of state and local organizations in Ohio. The loss of this timely data will create a information gap that decision-makers should consider how to bridge and ensure the most vulnerable populations are not left unseen in future data collection efforts. https://lnkd.in/evFdAMB4

#OTD in 1872, President Grant called for a 5-year census, aiming for more timely #CensusData. While Congress didn't fund it, the idea lived on. In 2005, we implemented the ongoing #AmericanCommunitySurvey, the premier source for detailed population and housing information about our nation. In the beginning of this year, we published our first Issue of 2024, starting with an intriguing paper by Heather Kitada Smalley and Mira Karthik from Willamette University about the US Census: ?Did People Rally ?Leave It Blank‘? A Tale of What Became of the Census Citizenship Question and Allocation Trends Through Time“. They discuss the citizenship question in the American Community Survey (ACS) and explore non-response rates in depth. https://lnkd.in/eJfQqrGz

Today's genealogical tip! Taken every 10 years since 1790, the United States census provides a snapshot of the nation's population. Because of a 72-year restriction on access to the records, the most recent census year currently available is 1950. On April 1, 2022, the 1950 Census was released, and users can access it for free through a dedicated website at 1950census.archives.gov. This population census is the 17th decennial census of the United States. The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has digitized and is providing free online access to the 1950 Census population schedules for U.S. states and territories, enumeration district maps, and enumeration district descriptions. How You Can Help You can search the 1950 Census website by name and location. You can also search by Indian Reservation for form P8 Indian Reservation Schedules. To develop the initial name index, we are using Amazon Web Services’ artificial intelligence / optical character recognition (AI/OCR) Textract tool to extract the handwritten names from the digitized 1950 Census population schedules. Because the initial name index is built on optical character recognition (OCR) technology, it is not 100-percent accurate. The National Archives is asking for your help in submitting name updates to the index using a transcription tool that is available on the 1950 Census website. You can help us improve the accuracy of the name index and make the records more accessible for everyone. More information will be forthcoming. https://lnkd.in/eHKCYe8a
