Last week an inception workshop for the planetGOLD Zambia project was held in Lusaka, bringing together key stakeholders of the Zambian artisanal gold mining sector including government organizations, civil society organizations, academia, and private sector to introduce the project and its priorities. The project plans to support over 11,000 men and women in the country and reduce mercury use by 1.14 metric tonnes over five years. ??The Government of Zimbabwe has launched the $23.7M planetGOLD Zimbabwe project to reduce mercury use in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM). Over the next five years, the project will improve health, formalize the sector, and strengthen responsible gold supply chains. Zimbabwe’s ASGM sector supports over 300,000 miners and contributes more than 40% of the country’s mineral exports. However, 96% of mine sites still rely on mercury—a toxic chemical that releases over 24 tonnes annually, endangering the environment and communities. With support from the Global Environment Facility, implemented by UN Environment Programme and executed by IMPACT in close coordination with the government, the project will: ? Support 7,500 miners in 11 districts ? Reduce mercury use by 4.85 tonnes ? Introduce mercury-free technologies ? Expand access to finance ? Promote formalization and responsible gold supply chains Zimbabwe joins 25 countries in the global planetGOLD programme, working to reduce mercury pollution and improve the lives of mining communities. ?? A new report from Global Witness reveals that the Philippines' push to become a major player in the global mining industry is endangering Indigenous Peoples and biodiversity. The Philippines is one of the most mineral-rich countries and the second-largest producer of nickel in the world. While mining for minerals like nickel is seen as necessary for the green energy transition, it has put Indigenous Peoples at the front lines of land theft, violence, and violation of rights, including Free, Prior, and Informed Consent. One-third of environmental land defenders killed in the Philippines were Indigenous and most of those cases were linked to mining. ?????Read more via Grist. #IndigenousPeoples?#IndigenousRights #JustTransition #Philippines

Amidst the great energy transition, copper is certainly where you want to be as an investor right now. If you are a junior exploration company in Africa, there are a few countries that I would prefer for several reasons. Unfortunately, I don’t have time or space in this post to expand on the reasons why I would choose Zambia, Angola, Botswana, Namibia or the DRC. Copper is regarded as a green-energy transition material, in part because of the wiring needed for electric cars (Ev’s). EVs can use as much as 80kg of copper, four times the amount typically used in combustion engine vehicles. The Central African Copperbelt region of north-western Zambia has delivered several world-class copper mines including TSX-listed First Quantum’s Sentinel and Kansanshi mines and Barrick’s prolific Lumwana copper mine. Nestled between these massive copper and nickel deposits, are license areas currently being explored by junior mining companies. One of these junior exploration companies, Prospect Resources, is working on the Mumbezhi Copper Project, which is located on a single Large Scale Exploration Licence covering an area of about 356 square kilometres, in an area highly prospective for large tonnage, low-to-medium grade copper-cobalt deposits. To the west of Mumbezhi is Sentinel and to the east is Kansanshi. Mumbezhi is approximately 30 km southwest of Barrick Gold’s Lumwana Copper Mine, which contains predominantly fresh copper sulphide mineralisation. South African opportunities for junior miners Although South Africa’s Just Energy Transition Implementation Plan (JETP) emphasises the need to move away from coal in electricity supply, it provides for opportunities in the critical mineral space. In an excellent article by Lili Nupen, Director Mining & Environmental Law at NSDV and Trevana Moodley, Candidate Attorney at NSDV, that was published on the WhyAfrica website this morning, they write that ?the critical minerals space presents valuable opportunities for junior miners in terms of exploration which will promote the growth of the junior mining sector in South Africa. “Being flexible in nature, junior miners are able to play a significant role in initiating the sourcing and supply of critical minerals, paving the way for the development of the critical mineral mining space in South Africa,” says Lili. The international hunt for critical minerals is on and may certainly prove profitable in the South Africa’s context. South Africa hosts a number of critical mineral and battery metal deposits. According to McKinsey’s latest report on battery metals, demand for lithium, nickel, manganese and cobalt is set to skyrocket, and demand will outpace supply for certain materials. ??? The report states further that the production of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) is expected to increase from 4.5 million in 2021 to 30 million by 2030 which means the world is facing a supply nightmare. ???? All these factors provide plenty of opportunities within the critical minerals space as part of the broader transition to renewable energy, and further provides ample opportunity for junior miners to take advantage of, especially in the Southern African region, with countries like South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, Malawi, DRC and Angola boasting large deposits of materials needed in the energy transition. ????? A number of international players are now present in Mozambique and several companies are exploring the country’s vast mineral resources. Besides gold, coal and mineral sands, Mozambique hosts substantial deposits of Rare Earth Elements (REE), graphite, lithium, and gemstones. Around the active mines, hubs of suppliers have sprung up, particularly in Tete and in Pemba (in Cabo Delgado). In addition, Mozambique benefits from the vast availability of mining suppliers and expertise in neighbouring South Africa. WhyAfrica will be travelling through Mozambique on the third leg of the 2024 WhyAfrica Road Trip through South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, and Tanzania. During this year’s 45-day trip we will attempt to visit more than 30 project sites and interview close to 40 stakeholders in the countries that we visit. The third leg of our trip is backed and endorsed by the Chamber of Mines of Mozambique (CMM) and our fantastic partners and sponsors, which we will be announcing soon. Remember, we still have partnership, sponsorship and advertising opportunities available so if you want to become part of this year's epic WhyAfrica story, contact us before the end of May to get the best deal.?????????????????? One of the most exciting mining projects in southern Africa is on track for planned first production in early 2026. Sovereign Metal’s Kasiya Rutile-Graphite Project, close to Lilongwe in Malawi, is a large-scale operation that will process soft, friable mineralisation mined from surface. The mine, which will have a strong environmental and social focus, is backed by multinational mining giant Rio Tinto. Kasiya has an expected Life of Mine of more than 25 years. Sovereign has just completed phase one of trail mining and preparations for phase two is well under way. ?? WhyAfrica visited Kasiya in day 17 of the 2024 WhyAfrica Road Trip through South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi and Tanzania. According to Maxwell Kazako, Country Manager at Sovereign Metals, the project boasts excellent infrastructure in terms of roads and rail, with a high-quality rail line connecting the deep-water port of Nacala in Mozambique to Kasiya. Kazako tells WhyAfrica during our site visit that the profound involvement of Rio Tinto and the incredible support by the Government of Malawi are special highlights in the development of this unique project in one of the most underdeveloped regions of the world. Read more about Malawi and the Kasiya Rutile-Graphite Project in the November issue of the WhyAfrica magazine, which will be displayed at next year’s Mining Indaba in Cape Town in February 2025. WhyAfrica is a media partner at Mining Indaba. WhyAfrica specialises in the sustainable utilisation and responsible extraction of Africa’s natural resources.
