My Journey from Academia to the Corporate World: This is my first LinkedIn post, and I feel it’s a good time to share my humble thoughts on this topic. After my PhD, I took a bold step and joined Linde Malaysia as a Sales Executive in November 2022. Many asked, "Why sales after a PhD?" Initially, these comments gave me pause, but I forged ahead. Now, I can say it’s one of the best decisions of my life. Sales is a battlefield where titles hold little weight; what matters is your service and convincing customers of your product's value. This environment teaches resilience and the importance of character and attitude. A PhD is an advantage in sales, especially with technically-minded customers. Discussing complex details builds trust and credibility, skills honed during my PhD. Every research project harbours untapped commercial potential. As a PhD, you excel at transforming intricate ideas into marketable solutions—an essential skill for business growth. It's not merely about technical expertise; it's about charting the course to commercialization and bringing ideas to life. In sales, you hone the art of selling products, a skill essential for commercializing every concept. Many PhDs shy away from sales roles due to misplaced "shame" or prestige concerns, and some companies fear overqualification. This is a missed opportunity. More often than not, PhDs are dedicated, not geniuses. Corporates should not pedestalize PhDs excessively, nor should PhDs. Your PhD title will be appreciated in the corporate world, yes! Respect is earned through contributions and impact, and colleagues and even customers will recognize your qualifications, often calling you "Dr." In conclusion, joining a corporate role after a PhD is rewarding. It pushes you out of your comfort zone, enhances practical skills, and applies academic insights in real-world scenarios.
