This past Monday, the state of California released it's plans to implement nature-based solutions on over half of its lands over the next 20 years. This initiative aims to help reach Governor Newsom's goal of making California carbon neutral by 2045. In the NBS Climate Targets 2024 document, the state defines nature-based solutions as "lands managed for health and resilience that can remove and store carbon, limit future GHG emissions, and increase resilience to climate impacts." An example would be restoring coastal wetlands and ecosystems to help prevent risks of flooding whilst expanding carbon storage and biodiversity concurrently. Excellent article from the pristine journal Nature shows through literature review and expert consultation that tropical and temperate forest conservation and reforestation as the surest mitigation paths for nature-based climate solutions (NbCS). What principles should define natural climate solutions? This is what the new The Nature Conservancy study answers, distilling five foundational principles of natural climate solutions and 15 operational principles to guide their implementation. In a conversation with Mongabay, Peter Ellis, the TNC Global Director of Natural Climate Solutions Science and one of the authors of the study, explained that the five principles provide an opportunity to address any confusion and controversy arising from not clearly circumscribing the boundaries of what a natural climate solution is and what it’s not.
