For the second straight year, the Plainfield Park District was chosen the BEST park district in the 2024 Herald-News Best of Will County Readers’ Choice Awards. The Park District will be honored at the Best of Will County Readers’ Choice Winners Celebration scheduled for December 9 at the Jacob Henry Mansion in Joliet. Founded in 1966, the Plainfield Park District is the 9th largest park district in the State of Illinois, serving over 110,000 residents in Will and Kendall counties including the areas of Plainfield, Joliet, Romeoville, Crest Hill and Bolingbrook. In 2024, the District earned its second National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management as selected by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). The District also was recognized as an Illinois Distinguished Accredited Agency in early 2024 for excellence in delivering parks and recreation services. The accreditation is a rigorous evaluation process by a joint committee of park and recreation professionals and elected officials and includes having to meet various standards and criteria in providing exceptional park and recreation services to the community. In 2022, the District joined the ranks of elite park and recreation agencies across the country by earning accreditation through the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) and the NRPA. CAPRA accreditation is the only national accreditation for park and recreation agencies, and is a measure of an agency’s overall quality of operation, management and service to the community. https://lnkd.in/g2hfNsM7

Parks and recreation play a vital role in our communities, enriching lives and providing essential services. The 2024 National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Agency Performance Review highlights the impact of these services. In national standards, each park serves approximately 2,386 residents, with 10.6 acres of parkland per 1,000 residents. As one of only 204 agencies in the nation, the North Port Parks & Recreation Department is CAPRA accredited through NRPA, showcasing its commitment to excellence. The NRPA's data reveals that 25.2 percent of agencies offer summer camps, demonstrating a strong community engagement effort as we do here in North Port. Nationally Parks & Recreation agencies average 8.9 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees per 10,000 residents and 46 percent of full-time staff dedicated to operations and maintenance, to ensure the smooth functioning and upkeep of their facilities. North Port being a finalist for the NRPA Gold Medal award this year underscores the city's commitment to providing exceptional parks and recreation services. What does it take to design a park that transforms a community? In PRB+ Magazine, one of our Principals, Ryan Collins, shares how the redevelopment of Sand Mountain Park & Amphitheater became a blueprint for community-centric design. From promoting health and economic growth to stewarding the land, this project exemplifies the power of thoughtful planning to create lasting impact.

I am pleased to announce the successful completion of my first major project as Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Granger, Iowa. In collaboration with CivicRec, I led the development, implementation, and launch of our new recreation registration and facility rental website. Our department required a solution that could adapt to a growing population while offering high levels of customization and scalability. CivicRec not only meets these needs but also allows us to tailor solutions to fit both our current operations and future growth. One of the key advantages of the new platform is improved data collection. With built-in tools for surveys, prompts, and report creation, we can gather insights ethically and use them to make informed, data-driven decisions to better serve our community. My Role in the Project... While the idea of CivicRec was initially presented to the council by the former Parks and Recreation Director, I took the project forward and made it a reality. Here’s how: - Securing CivicRec Approval: I formally advocated for CivicRec by clearly outlining why it was necessary for our department and emphasizing its benefits to the council. - Customizing the Platform: After CivicRec was approved, I worked closely with their team to tailor the website to meet our department’s unique needs and ensure it reflected Granger’s character. This included configuring the platform to align with our organizational policies. - Project Planning and Execution: In September, I established a project timeline with a target completion date of January 31st. By staying organized and maintaining clear communication, I successfully delivered the project ahead of schedule, launching it around January 1st. - Securing Payment Processing: I identified a payment processing service compatible with CivicRec, secured council approval for the agreement, and integrated it into the new platform. - Coordinating Website Transition: I extended our existing website contract to align with CivicRec’s launch timeline. This ensured a seamless transition without service interruptions. - Budget Management: To accommodate the costs of switching systems, I negotiated a discounted price with CivicRec. This involved presenting and obtaining approval for multiple agreements through the city council. - Through careful planning, effective negotiation, and collaboration, I was able to deliver a solution that strengthens our department’s services and provides lasting value to the community. This project represents a significant step forward, and I am proud to have played a key role in its success. Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/gYaEg9dx

The Parks and Recreation Collection (PaRC) has become the most extensive collection of parks and recreation government, academic and practitioner documents in Australia. The committee responsible for the Collection work in the background to maintain and enhance the collection. The next cache of documents have been added and are included in a new Narrative that is health and well-being focused. If you haven't checked out the Collection yet we highly recommend that you do so. Remember that the Collection covers academic papers, a diverse range of government strategies, and a full suite of local government strategies and plans, including the most up to date open space and recreation, and activity specific planning documents. If you are looking for the latest thinking, or want to "pinch" a template for your latest work, then visit the Collection. PaRC also invites all consultants working in the field to consider uploading their work to the Collection, to expand the industry knowledge base, and to promote their work to their clients. U.S. House Passes SEMA-Supported EXPLORE Act to Boost Outdoor Recreation Economy ?? ?? The U.S. House of Representatives passed the SEMA-supported "Expanding Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Experiences Act" (EXPLORE Act), H.R. 6492, by a voice vote. The EXPLORE Act, which has a broad range of support from more than 30 organizations, now advances to the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources (ENR) Committee. The strongly bipartisan legislation is sponsored by Natural Resources Chairman Bruce Westerman (R-AR), who drafted the bill in coordination with Ranking Member Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ). The EXPLORE Act expands on S. 873, the "America's Outdoor Recreation Act of 2023" (AORA), and includes key, SEMA-supported provisions from the bill. The Senate ENR Committee passed S. 873 in 2023. "SEMA thanks Chairman Westerman and Ranking Member Grijalva for their continued advocacy for the EXPLORE Act, which was critical in getting the House to pass the bill with such strong bipartisan support," said Mike Spagnola, SEMA president and CEO. "The EXPLORE Act is critical to the motorized recreation community. The bill would streamline the process and expenses associated with obtaining special recreation permits, require federal land management agencies to increase opportunities for motorized and non-motorized access on public lands, and direct the BLM and Forest Service to make maps available to the public depicting where vehicles are allowed to recreate." ?? https://brnw.ch/21wIUg6
