“PJM is considering three avenues for helping to get generation online more quickly, according to a presentation at the meeting. They include reforming the process for transferring capacity interconnection rights from deactivating power plants to other resources; changing the process for using surplus interconnection capacity; and the Reliability Resource Initiative.”

Some good news! Accelerating the interconnection process for new resources is a huge step in improving resource adequacy for our ever-increasing demand and facilitating the energy transition to renewables.

Today RMI released a new report on the benefits grid-enhancing technologies (GETs) can offer the PJM region. Some key takeaways: ?Facilitate the cost-effective interconnection of 6.6 GW of new capacity from the existing PJM queue within the next three years. ?GETs-enabled new generators and reduced congestion would reduce energy production costs by just under $1 billion in 2027, increasing to more than $1 billion in savings annually by 2030. The analysis examined the potential for GETs to facilitate the cost-effective interconnection of new generation across five PJM states: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Following a multi-year moratorium on new transmission level interconnections in #PJM, was it any wonder that one of the largest and most important energy markets in the country saw an exponential increase in capacity pricing earlier this month??This event is not a helpful or timely signal to build new assets, which is how markets are supposed to function, but instead a lagging indicator of an energy market in disarray.?New assets have been developed, and as of 2023 end over 3,000 active projects representing hundreds of GWs of new capacity have been sitting in queue waiting for an interconnection slot.?This inefficient interconnection process has been observed across a number of ISO/RTOs, with long queues also present in #MISO, NE-ISO, and other regions, and will result in higher generation pricing passed along to retail consumers. https://lnkd.in/eMyBrVHN

Most likely this increase in demand will be supplied by the growing DER generation.
