The Renaissance of Ball-Carrying Midfielders in Modern Football
This Premier League season has been refreshing to watch, particularly when it comes to the resurgence of certain types of midfielders. Players like Ryan Gravenberch at Liverpool and Carlos Baleba at Brighton have reintroduced a quality that I felt had been somewhat overlooked in recent years.
These players bring a unique ability to glide through the midfield, break lines, and maintain composure in tight spaces, reminiscent of some of my favorite midfielders of all time. Mousa Dembélé, during his time at Spurs, was a master at navigating through crowded midfield areas — often untouchable in possession. Similarly, Santi Cazorla at Arsenal epitomized elegance, his ability to manipulate the ball and unlock defenses made him a joy to watch.
Football continues to evolve rapidly, with data analytics, video technology, and tactical systems enabling coaches to construct robust defensive organizations. Breaking through such compact setups has become an art form in itself. In these scenarios, midfielders who can carry the ball, draw opponents, and relieve pressure have an invaluable role to play.
As we look to the future, I believe the importance of ball-carrying midfielders will only grow. These players have the ability to turn defensive situations into attacking opportunities, breaking opposition lines when passing options are limited.
Fellow coaches and football enthusiasts, I’d love to hear your thoughts:
Which players do you think epitomize this style of midfield play?
Who are your all-time favorite midfielders in this category?
How do you see the role of such players evolving in the years to come?
Congratulations!
