Prior to a total shoulder arthroplasty, a CT is completed so that we can obtain detailed pictures of the patient's shoulder anatomy. The CT is then uploaded into a preoperative planning system which allows us to create a personalized surgical plan for the procedure. Arthrex's VIP app is a perfect example of one of the planning systems that we commonly use. Through the VIP app, we are presented with a 3D reconstruction of the patient's shoulder. From there, we are able to select the placement of both the humeral and glenoid components along with the size of implants that we will use. Planning systems like these provide insight to challenges that may arise during the procedure and ensure that the operation goes smoothly. This video gives you an insider's look at the VIP app and demonstrates how it allows us to plan for each part of a total shoulder arthroplasty procedure.
