"No, sweetie, we can't light the menorah yet. It's 2pm." To my fellow synagogue professionals who are also parents during Hanukkah: I see you. I see you: ? Writing program descriptions while supervising latke-making ? Updating member communications between dreidel tournaments ? Coordinating with staff while your kids beg to open "just one present" ? Running community events AND trying to make magical memories at home The juggle is real. The emails don't stop. The programs must go on. And our kids? They just want us present for every moment of these eight crazy nights. But here's what I keep reminding myself: We're literally living the mission we work for - building Jewish community and creating Jewish memories. Sometimes that means sending emails from the kitchen counter. Sometimes it means bringing our kids to work. And sometimes it means accepting that good enough is... actually enough. Last night, I found my spouse, a synagogue professional, typing a program description one-handed while flipping latkes with the other. My 4-year-old asked, "Mommy, why do you have to work during Hanukkah?" She paused. Put down her phone. And looked at me as we both realized something important: The very moments we’re working to create for other families are the ones we sometimes miss with our own. To every parent working in synagogue life during the holidays: I know you're: ? Running community events while your own menorah waits at home ? Coordinating volunteer schedules between your kids' holiday performances ? Making sure everyone else's families have a magical holiday... sometimes at the expense of your own But here's what makes it worth it: Our children are watching us build Jewish community. They're seeing what it means to create light for others. And yes, sometimes that means answering emails during candle lighting or bringing them along to program prep. Free Meals - Concept of Community Kitchen at the Jaffna University. The concept of providing free meals to students, especially those who are economically suppressed, has continued at Jaffna University since the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 4000 students benefit from this program. The project was initiated by the lecturers of the university by donating money initially for the project and the people and organizations in the community have come together to carry out the program successfully. This is a classic example of the development concept: Asset-Based Community Development. The words “Asset-Based” refer to a positive “community capacity-driven” approach that encourages community members to make progress for themselves as opposed to a traditional “needs-driven” approach, which makes the community psychologically and physically dependent on outside help. #srilanka #university #education https://lnkd.in/gpd9Kps2
