What is amazing (and sometimes challenging) about the innovation/startup economy in SoCal is its diversity. Though consumer media (Silicon Beach) often steals the SoCal headlines, the bloom seems to have come off that rose a bit as the pandemic fades further in the rearview mirror. While we always hate to see any part of our regional innovation economy contract, this does give an opportunity for new sectors to gain visibility. The Alliance for Southern California Innovation has been tracking the emergence of our deep tech economy (think science & engineering driven-innovation like aerospace, robotics, automation, cleantech, quantum computing, foundational AI-platforms, biotech, etc) and recognize the growing momentum in these areas. We are looking forward to celebrating these innovation areas in late September as part of the inaugural SoCal Deep Tech Week (https://lnkd.in/gXSC9kkN). These sectors leverage both SoCal incredible academic/research capabilities and robust aerospace/engeering/manufacturing heritage. They also often require innovators to be together in lab or fabrication space bucking the remote work/distributed workforce trends that have hallowed out many traditional tech neighborhoods. It is worth looking at El Segundo (the "Gundo") as a specific SoCal case study (see article below). So while I am hopeful our consumer content/gaming space will bounce back, it is nice to see other sectors fill the gap and gain some well deserved recognition for their important and uniquely SoCal innovation impact. #SoCalDeepTech #ThisisSoCal https://lnkd.in/gkwGCT_v

This is an insightful post discussing the intricacies of ‘manufacturing.’ However, it falls short in emphasizing the crucial role manufacturing plays. The way one manufactures a product can serve as a barrier to entry for competitors, mitigate supply chain risks, influence margins, lead times, and more. Regrettably, many business leaders and investors often overlook manufacturing’s significance by treating it as an afterthought, rather than an opportunity to ensure success. Neglecting a robust manufacturing strategy, or not executing well, may impact cash flow, divert attention from innovation and growth, and lead to business failure. Success in manufacturing yields significant rewards, but the risks are equally substantial. If you’re contemplating manufacturing your products, do it right or consider the contract manufacturing route. Vendors specializing in contract manufacturing can provide expertise, reducing manufacturing risks, while providing you with a turn-key solution. This is a critical issue for most climate tech startups. Their tech is usually capital intensive equipment that requires significant manufacturing input. From a degree in the Netherlands to the first satellite launch in Costa Rica in 2018, to the UK to launch a space company, we talk to Marco Gomez-Jenkins, Co-Founder and CEO of SuperSharp. Marco talks about his background, going to MBA at Imperial College to learn ‘business’, which led him to Professor Ian Parry at the University of Cambridge who together with George Hawker became co-founders of SuperSharp. SuperSharp is an Earth-imaging company developing unfolding space telescopes to capture high-resolution thermal infrared (TIR) images of the Earth. These images can be used for applications such as tackling climate change, crop monitoring, and maintaining global security, allowing high-quality affordable Earth-imaging solutions to empower the world in responding to global change. With a space launch mid-2026, SuperSharp will have had just over 15 years of R&D funded by the UK Space Agency, Innovate UK, the European Space Agency - ESA, the UK Ministry of Defence Accelerator, plus equity investment from Cambridge Enterprise, and some individual angel investors.
